Chapter 16 - BloodlineThe drive to Saint Agnes took nine minutes.

Alessandro felt every second like a verdict.

His father had another son.

Mateo Reyes.

Not employee.

Not servant.

Brother.

The word did not fit anywhere.

He remembered Mateo at twenty, standing in the rain beside a cargo truck, arguing numbers with men twice his age. He remembered trusting him faster than he trusted most blood. He remembered Mateo’s quiet patience, the way he listened before speaking, the way he never bowed too low.

Now Alessandro understood why.

Some part of Mateo had known, even before proof.

Some blood recognized itself without permission.

Maria sat beside him in the SUV, silent and shaking. Lily and Gabriel were back at the mansion under federal guard, furious at being left behind. For once, neither child had won the argument.

Agent Ward’s convoy followed.

Nico drove.

No one spoke until the hospital appeared ahead.

Then Alessandro said, “When did Mateo know?”

Maria stared at her hands.

“Six months before he died.”

“Did my father know?”

“Yes.”

The answer was a blade.

“He acknowledged him?”

“In private.”

“Of course.”

Maria flinched.

Alessandro forced his voice lower.

“I’m not angry at you.”

“You should be.”

“I have a long list. You are not near the top.”

She gave a broken breath.

“Victor Romano loved Mateo’s mother. She was a nurse. Poor. Kind. Not from your world. When she became pregnant, Victor paid for an apartment and security, but he never gave Mateo the name. Your mother found out years later.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

Another ghost entered the car.

His mother, betrayed in life, murdered in silence, buried beside a husband whose secrets had outlived them all.

“Did Mateo hate me?”

Maria looked at him then.

“No.”

That answer came quickly.

“He envied you when he was young. Then he met you.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“He said you carried the cage he had escaped. He said being named Romano was not privilege. It was a sentence.”

The words reached somewhere no apology could.

The SUV stopped at the hospital emergency entrance.

Agent Ward met them outside with four federal officers.

“Records wing is on the fourth floor. Local security reports a woman matching Vittoria’s description entered with forged credentials fifteen minutes ago.”

“Alive and walking?” Nico asked.

“Barely. But yes.”

Alessandro looked toward the hospital doors.

Vittoria was injured, exposed, hunted, and still attacking.

That made her more dangerous, not less.

They moved fast through the hospital corridors. Nurses stared. Patients leaned from rooms. No one stopped the armed federal line cutting toward the elevators.

On the fourth floor, the records wing lights flickered.

A security guard lay unconscious near the desk, breathing but bleeding from the forehead.

Nico checked him.

“Alive.”

Ward pointed two officers left.

Alessandro went right.

Rows of filing cabinets lined the room, though most records were digital now. At the far end, an office door stood open.

Inside, a computer screen glowed.

A printer hummed.

On the floor were scattered birth certificates.

Lily Reyes.

Gabriel Marquez.

Mateo Reyes.

Adrian Bellamy.

And one more name Alessandro did not recognize.

Rose Carrow.

Isabella’s mother.

Maria picked it up.

“Why would she print this?”

A soft voice answered from behind the shelves.

“Because Rose Carrow had another child.”

Isabella stepped out from between two aisles, escorted by an agent.

Alessandro turned sharply.

Ward said, “She insisted she knew the old archive layout. She was right.”

Isabella looked pale but steady.

“My mother died when I was five,” she said. “At least that’s what I was told.”

Alessandro felt the pattern forming.

Dead mothers who weren’t dead.

Children hidden.

Names changed.

Widows made powerful by graves they helped dig.

Isabella lifted the birth certificate.

“This says Rose gave birth again two years after my father died.”

Maria stared.

“To whom?”

Isabella read the name.

“Clara Bellamy.”

Nico cursed.

“Grant’s sister?”

Isabella shook her head.

“Grant’s wife.”

The room went cold.

Agent Ward understood first.

“Vittoria connected the Carrow and Bellamy lines through adoption and marriage. She created claims on both sides.”

Alessandro looked at the computer.

“What was she searching when she ran?”

Ward examined the screen.

“Custody filings. Sealed juvenile files. Foster transfers.”

“For whom?”

Ward’s face changed.

She turned the monitor toward them.

A photograph appeared.

A teenage girl, maybe sixteen, dark-haired, expression guarded.

Name: Clara Bellamy.

Status: Missing.

Last known location: Annapolis.

Isabella whispered, “I have a sister.”

Before anyone could respond, the printer produced one final page.

Not a certificate.

A message.

Large black letters filled the page.

Bring Gabriel and Lily to Annapolis by sunset, or Clara joins her mother.

Isabella staggered.

Alessandro caught her by the elbow before she fell.

This time, she did not ask why.

Agent Ward grabbed the page.

“She’s escalating.”

“No,” Alessandro said. “She’s gathering bloodlines.”

Nico looked at him.

“For what?”

Maria answered, voice shaking.

“To decide who gets to live under the next lie.”

Alessandro looked at Isabella.

For a moment, the woman who had almost killed him was simply a daughter who had just learned grief had another room.

“I know Annapolis,” Isabella said. “Vittoria used a house there. White shutters. Private dock.”

Ward shook her head.

“No children.”

Alessandro nodded.

“No children.”

Maria looked relieved for half a second.

Then a nurse ran into the records wing, breathless.

“Mr. Romano?”

Everyone turned.

She held out a hospital phone with trembling hands.

“There’s a call for you. A little girl said it was urgent.”

Maria’s face drained.

Alessandro took the phone.

“Lily?”

Her voice came through small and terrified.

“Mr. Romano, don’t be mad.”

His blood went cold.

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then Gabriel’s voice whispered beside her, “We followed the wrong car.”

May you like

Lily started crying.

“We’re in Annapolis.”
