Chapter 3 - Ghosts of the PastThe man on the screen wore an expensive tailored suit, sitting in a dimly lit office overlooking the glittering skyline of Zurich. A thin, jagged scar cut across his left cheek—a souvenir from a knife fight we had shared when we were brothers in arms.

Julian Vance.

My chest tightened as if struck by a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs.

"Hello, brother," Julian said, swirling a glass of amber whiskey toward the camera lens. "Did you really think a few liters of diesel and a burning warehouse back in Palermo would be enough to get rid of me?"

"You're dead," I growled, my grip on the phone tightening until my knuckles turned pure white. Across the table, Elena flinched at the sudden fury in my voice. I forced myself to soften my tone, placing a calming hand near Bruno. "I watched you burn, Julian."

"Pyrotechnics are a wonderful thing, Dante," Julian smiled, his eyes cold and dead behind designer frames. "Much like illusions. You spend your entire life building an empire of fear in the North District, believing you're the apex predator. But while you were playing king of the dirty streets, I was building something much larger."

"What does this have to do with Clara O'Shea?" I demanded, cutting straight through his corporate pleasantries. "Why kidnap an innocent woman and use a child to deliver a message?"

Julian’s smile faded, replaced by a dark, calculated expression. "Clara found the formula, Dante. The new chemical compound we’re testing through the city's water infrastructure. It doesn't kill instantly; it makes people compliant, docile, and completely suggestible. A whole district of obedient ghosts, ready to vote, buy, and obey whatever we command."

My blood ran cold. This wasn't just a turf war. This was biological enslavement on a mass scale.

"And Clara threatened to expose it," I muttered.

"Precisely," Julian nodded. "So we snatched her. But here’s the interesting part, brother. I knew Vittorio was your weakest link. I bought him months ago. And I knew that if Clara’s kid went looking for help, she’d naturally gravitate toward the scariest monster in the city—you."

A sickening realization washed over me.

"You orchestrated this," I whispered. "You sent Elena to me."

"Of course I did," Julian chuckled softly. "I wanted to see if the great Dante still had a heart beating under that cold chest of stone. I wanted to test you. And look at you now—ready to tear down the world for a little girl you've known for twenty minutes."

Julian leaned closer to the camera, his voice dropping to a harsh, mocking whisper.

"If you want Clara back alive, Dante, bring me the ledger. The master ledger containing every bank account, politician bribe, and asset you've accumulated over the last decade. Bring it to Pier 49 by midnight. Come alone. Otherwise, the good doctor takes a very permanent swim in the bay, and little Elena joins her shortly after."
