Chapter 6: The Trap is Set

The next seventy-two hours were a living nightmare. Richard’s legal team was ruthless. They didn't just file papers; they launched a full-scale smear campaign.
By Thursday morning, local Facebook community groups and gossip blogs were flooded with anonymous posts detailing my "unstable mental history," twisted narratives about my divorce from my ex-husband, and false claims that Maisie was being kept in an unsafe environment. The court of public opinion was being manipulated perfectly.
"Julianne, this is bad," my lawyer, Marcus, said over the phone. His voice was grim. "Richard is using your father's old connections. They’ve manufactured a paper trail showing you received illegal distributions from the trust before it collapsed. If the judge believes you're complicit in your father's fraud, they could freeze your assets and award temporary custody of Maisie to Richard as a neutral third-party relative."
"He's not a relative! He's Chelsea's father!" I screamed into the receiver, tears of rage blurring my vision.
"On paper, because your mother never legally declared his paternity, he’s leveraging a loophole through your father's signed endorsement," Marcus explained. "We need hard evidence that Richard and your father are colluding to defraud the court. Otherwise, the hearing on Monday will be a disaster."
I hung up the phone, burying my face in my hands. Maisie was at school, but I knew it was only a matter of time before the rumors reached the playground. I couldn't let them break her again.
A knock on the back door startled me. I grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the counter, my nerves completely shot. I crept to the kitchen window and looked out.
Standing on the back porch, wearing a oversized hoodie and sunglasses, was Chelsea.
I opened the door cautiously, keeping the chain locked. "What are you doing here, Chelsea? Come to finish what your father started?"
She pulled off her sunglasses. Her eyes were red, swollen from crying. "Julianne, please. Let me in. I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know he was doing this."
I stared at her for a long second, looking for any sign of deceit. Chelsea had testified truthfully in court six months ago, but the wounds between us ran deep. Yet, the sheer terror in her face looked genuine. I unlocked the chain and stepped back.
She practically collapsed into the kitchen, leaning against the counter. "My dad... Richard... he contacted me a week ago. He told me he wanted to make things right. He said he found a way to get our family's money back from the courts so we could start over."
"By stealing my daughter?" I spat.
"He told me it was just a legal formality to freeze your accounts!" Chelsea cried, her voice cracking. "But last night, I overheard him talking to your father on a burner phone. Julianne, they aren't trying to save the money. Richard owes millions to dangerous people. He’s going to take Maisie, use her as leverage to force you to sign over the dormant Panama trust, and then... he's going to flee the country. He doesn't care about me. He doesn't care about anyone."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, black USB drive. "I cloned his phone while he was asleep. Everything is on here. The text messages with your father, the offshore account routing numbers, and the proof that they paid off the CPS caseworker to file a false report against you."
I looked at the USB drive, then up at Chelsea. "Why are you giving me this? You could have taken a cut. You could have had the life you always wanted."
Chelsea let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "The life I wanted was a lie, Julianne. Our parents ruined us. They made us monsters because they thought love was something you buy and trade. But when I saw Maisie's face at that Christmas dinner... when I remembered how she looked at me after I pushed her... I realized I don't want to be a monster anymore. I want to be human."
She placed the drive on the table and turned toward the door. "The hearing is Monday. Richard has a meeting tomorrow night at a private lounge downtown with the corrupted caseworker to finalize the paperwork. If you send the police there with Marcus, you can catch them in the act of bribery."
"Chelsea, wait," I called out as she reached the door.
She paused, not looking back.
"Thank you," I said softly.

"Don't thank me yet," she whispered. "Richard is dangerous. If he finds out I betrayed him, he won't just stop at a lawsuit."
That night, as I tucked Maisie into bed, I watched her sleep, her breathing slow and peaceful. I held the USB drive tightly in my hand. My father had spent my whole life teaching me that family was a battlefield. Tomorrow, I was going to bring the war to his doorstep.
