Chapter 9 - Justice Served

"POLICE! DON'T MOVE!"

The command shattered the evening silence like a thunderclap.

Before Higgins could even register the sound, red laser sights illuminated his chest and forehead. From the high grass and behind the rusted machinery, SWAT officers burst forward, weapons raised.

Higgins froze, his eyes wide with sudden, pathetic terror. The bravado vanished in an instant. Dropping the pocketknife into the dirt, he threw his hands into the air, trembling violently.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I surrender!" he shrieked, falling to his knees.

Detective Reyes stepped out from behind a concrete barrier, his sidearm trained directly on Higgins. Two tactical officers rushed in, slamming Higgins face-down into the dirt, pulling his arms roughly behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As they hauled him to his feet, Higgins looked at me, his face smeared with dirt and tears. "Sarah, please... tell them I didn't mean it! Tell them it was an accident!"

I walked slowly up to him, standing inches from his face. I looked him dead in the eye, seeing the sniveling, hollow coward hiding beneath the fake smile he had worn for years.

"My daughter's name is Chloe," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and filled with unwavering strength. "And you will never, ever say her name again."

Detective Reyes read him his rights as they dragged him away toward a waiting police van. The sound of the van doors slamming shut was the sweetest music I had ever heard.

Reyes walked over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "It's over, Sarah. He's never getting out. Between the physical evidence, the voice recording, the child endangerment, and fleeing arrest, he's going away for a very, very long time."

I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. For the first time in nearly a week, the suffocating weight in my chest lifted.

"Thank you, Detective," I whispered. "Thank you for listening."

"You did this, Sarah," Reyes smiled gently. "You trusted your gut when everyone else told you nothing was wrong. That's what mothers do."
