Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Oak Creek

The hospital bay transformed in a matter of minutes.
Heavy plastic sheeting was sealed over the doors with thick silver tape. Two guards in dark uniforms—not hospital security, but unmarked state contractors carrying sidearms—stood outside the glass window.
Chloe had been given a mild sedative through her IV line. She lay on her side, her breathing heavy and rhythmic, her eyes closed. The black line beneath her skin seemed to have settled into a resting state now that the bright lights had been dimmed and the room was kept cool.
I sat in a metal chair beside her bed, holding a glass of water I couldn't bring myself to drink.
Dr. Aris Thorne sat across from me. He had pulled up a rolling stool, his old leather binder open on his knees.
"I owe you the truth, Mrs. Miller," Dr. Thorne said quietly, checking the doorway to ensure the guards weren't listening. "Because if we don't act within the next twelve hours, the surgical team will attempt a standard resection, and that will kill your daughter."
"Tell me," I demanded. My voice was beyond fear now. It was filled with a cold, desperate strength. "Tell me everything."
"In 1991, the facility behind the Oak Creek industrial reserve wasn't a chemical processing plant," Dr. Thorne explained, his thumb tracing the worn edge of a photograph. "It was a clandestine research site funded by a private defense contractor called Aegis Environmental Solutions. They were working on bio-synthetic materials—specifically, self-assembling carbon-based micro-threads meant to seal internal traumatic wounds in soldiers on the battlefield."
I stared at him. "A self-assembling thread?"
"Yes. It was designed to react to human body heat and specific chemical signals in blood," he continued. "Once introduced to a wound, the micro-threads would deploy, seeking out surrounding blood vessels and binding to them to stop internal hemorrhaging instantly. It was supposed to be a medical miracle."
"What went wrong?"
"The synthetic material was too efficient," Dr. Thorne said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "It didn't just bind to damaged tissue. Once it entered a living host, it couldn't turn itself off. It mistook normal esophageal motility—the act of swallowing—for a internal tear. It began to root itself, attempting to 'repair' healthy structures by anchoring them to surrounding muscle."
My stomach turned over. "That's why it hurts her to swallow. It thinks her throat is a wound."
"Exactly," Dr. Thorne said grimly. "When the project was shut down in 1994 after three laboratory accidents, the contractor didn't properly incinerate the biological waste. They buried it sixty feet underground in sealed steel drums behind the Oak Creek facility."
"The rain," I whispered, the memory suddenly crashing into my mind. "Last week, we had that massive storm. The creek flooded the park."
"The drums leaked," Dr. Thorne confirmed. "The micro-threads were washed into the topsoil. Chloe was playing in the dirt. She likely touched her mouth with contaminated fingers, or inhaled a microscopic airborne fragment. Once inside her throat, the heat and moisture of her mucous membranes woke it up."
"How do we get it out?" I begged, leaning forward, grabbing the sleeve of his lab coat. "You have thirty-year-old files! There has to be a way to destroy it!"
Dr. Thorne looked down at his binder. "In 1993, we discovered that the synthetic material is made of a carbon-polymer matrix. It is impervious to standard antibiotics, antivirals, and anti-inflammatory drugs. If a surgeon cuts into it with a scalpel, the mechanical vibration triggers a defense mechanism: the root system contracts violently, crushing whatever structure it is wrapped around."
"Her carotid artery," I gasped, the horror hitting me like a tidal wave. "If they cut her, it will tear her artery."
"Yes," Dr. Thorne said. "That is how the two technicians died thirty years ago."
"Then what do we do?!"
"There was one substance that neutralized the polymer during the lab trials," Dr. Thorne said, his eyes locking onto mine with desperate intensity. "A specific chelating solvent—Compound 7-B. It breaks the carbon bonds without harming human tissue. But Aegis destroyed all official stocks when the project was abandoned."
"Is there any left?"
Dr. Thorne leaned in closer, his voice so quiet I had to strain to hear it over the hum of Chloe's heart monitor.
"The head scientist on Project Phantom Root was Dr. Victor Mercer. He refused to allow the company to destroy his research. When the plant closed, he took three vials of Compound 7-B and hid them in his private workshop."
"Where is he?"
"He lives three miles from your house," Dr. Thorne said. "An old, forgotten old man living at the end of Blackwood Lane. The company has kept him under non-disclosure surveillance for thirty years. He won't answer a phone call from me. He won't open his door to police or doctors. He knows Aegis is waiting for him to break his contract so they can confiscate his property."

"He'll open the door for a mother," I said.
