Chapter 7 - THE STRATEGY OF THE PROTECTOR

The silence in the study was absolute.

Serena sat on the small leather sofa in the corner, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her face pale. She was staring at the small, silver key that had fallen from the ledger.

“So you hired me,” she said, her voice flat, devoid of any emotion. “You knew who I was. You knew Lucia was your daughter. You brought us into this house to use us.”

“I brought you here to protect you,” Vittorio said, sitting opposite her in a low armchair. He had taken off his wet jacket, his linen shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos of his family's crest on his forearms. “Daniel’s lawyer didn't file that emergency custody motion because of your housing, Serena. He filed it because he was paid to do it by a man named Harold Vance.”

“Vance?” Serena looked up, her brow furrowing. “My mother-in-law’s attorney? Why would he care about me?”

“Because Harold Vance is the executor of the Rinaldi trust’s rival holdings,” Vittorio said, his eyes darkening. “The Vance family has been trying to seize our commercial sites for ten years. They know about Lucia. They want Daniel to get custody of her so they can use her as a leverage chip against me in the audit.”

He leaned forward, his hands flat on his knees.

“If Daniel gets custody, they will run a real DNA test. They will prove she is my daughter. And then they will file a petition to have her placed under a state guardianship because of my ‘unstable’ lifestyle. They will take her from you, Serena. And they will take her from me.”

“And what is your plan?” Serena asked, her teeth clicking together with a sudden, sharp fear.

“We fight them together,” Vittorio said. “In ten days, we go to the family court. We don't go as employer and employee. We go as husband and wife.”

Serena gasped. “You... you want to marry me?”

“It’s the only way, Serena,” Vittorio said, his voice carrying the cold, tactical weight of a man who spent his life playing chess with the city’s power brokers. “If we are married, our assets are combined. Our home is legally considered the primary residence of both children. The court cannot grant custody to Daniel because a married mother with a secure, multi-million-dollar estate is legally untouchable in this state.”

“And Lucia?”

“Lucia remains your daughter on paper,” Vittorio said, his eyes softening for the first time. “We do not tell her the truth until she is old enough to understand it. To the world, she is your daughter from your first marriage, and she is my stepdaughter. But she will be safe, Serena. She will have the Rinaldi name, the Rinaldi security, and the Rinaldi fortune to protect her.”

He stood up and walked to the window, his back to her.

“But you have to decide now, Serena. The Vance family is already moving. If you don't sign the marriage license tomorrow morning, they will file the emergency motion on Monday, and I won't be able to stop them.”

Serena looked down at the silver key in her hand.

She thought of Lucia’s bright, beautiful smile when Leo gave her the red marble. She thought of her daughter’s laughter in the garden, the safety of the warm third-floor suite, and the sheer terror she had felt every night in Astoria when she wondered if she would have enough money for groceries the next week.

She was a mother.

And a mother’s shield was always made of sacrifice.

“I’ll do it,” Serena said.
