Chapter 6 - A Life Rebuilt

One Year Later
The morning sun over the Bay of Naples was brilliant, painting the ocean in shades of deep sapphire and sparkling gold.
The terrace of the white stone villa overlooked the water, lined with blooming bougainvillea and olive trees. The scent of fresh espresso and warm lemon pastries drifted through the open French doors.
Sophia sat at a wrought-iron table on the balcony, reading a book while enjoying the quiet morning breeze. She wore an elegant cream-colored linen dress, her hair styled softly, her face free from the exhaustion and fear that had plagued her years as a struggling single mother in New York.
Down on the grassy lawn below the terrace, a loud giggle echoed through the warm air.
Emma was chasing Biscotti through the grass. The calico cat, now older and slightly plump, ambled along with lazy contentment, allowing the seven-year-old girl to tag him gently.
Walking behind them, wearing a relaxed linen shirt and holding a pair of wooden lawn oars, was Lorenzo Duca.
His scars had healed, his posture was strong, and the cold, terrifying mafia boss had completely vanished in the presence of his young savior. He laughed out loud as Emma attempted to teach Biscotti how to fetch a tennis ball.
Marco Bruno walked onto the balcony, carrying a silver tray with fresh orange juice. He set it down beside Sophia, smiling as he watched the scene on the lawn.
"He hasn't touched a cigar or mentioned syndicate business in three weeks," Marco remarked softly. "The family business in New York is being run by my lieutenants now. Don Lorenzo prefers Naples."
"He deserves peace," Sophia said, looking down at Lorenzo with deep affection and gratitude. "We all do."
Lorenzo looked up at the balcony, seeing Sophia smiling down at him. He waved her down to the lawn.
"Come join us, Sophia!" Lorenzo called out, his voice rich and full of life. "Emma says Biscotti is winning the game!"
Sophia laughed, setting her book down on the table. She walked down the stone stairs into the warm Italian sunlight, stepping onto the grass where her daughter and the man who had become their protector were waiting.
Emma ran over, grabbing Sophia’s hand with one of hers and Lorenzo’s hand with the other.
"Look, Mama!" Emma beamed, pointing her pink titanium scissors toward the endless blue ocean. "No one is tied up, and the sun is shining!"

Lorenzo squeezed Emma’s little hand gently, looking over at Sophia with a quiet, everlasting promise in his eyes.
"That's right, Emma," Lorenzo said softly. "The sun is shining, and we are finally home."
