Chapter 3 - The Edge of the Storm

Lucy woke at eleven-thirty to the soft sound of snow falling outside her window and the smell of toasted bread and cinnamon drifting through the hallway.

She sat up quickly, panic spiking through her chest as she checked her watch. Eleven-thirty-five. She had slept for nearly five hours.

She threw off her blanket, washed her face with cold water, and quickly pulled her hair back into a tight, neat bun. She dressed in a fresh charcoal wool skirt and a soft cream cardigan—her standard uniform for afternoons with Emma—and hurried down the long carpeted hallway toward the nursery wing.

When she stepped into the playroom, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The room was bathed in soft sunlight that was finally breaking through the winter clouds. Emma was sitting on the thick sheepskin rug in the center of the room, dressed in a bright yellow sweater. Beside her, sitting cross-legged on the floor with his expensive suit trousers completely folded under him, was Matteo Moretti.

He was holding a tiny wooden tea cup, his long, scarred fingers looking entirely absurd against the painted porcelain toy.

"More tea, Mr. Bear?" Emma asked, her voice light, clear, and completely free of the raspy congestion that had plagued her the night before.

"Mr. Bear says he has had three cups already, Emma," Matteo said, his deep voice soft and relaxed. "He is worried his stomach will burst."

"Mr. Bear is a giant," Emma declared with six-year-old authority. "Giants drink ten cups."

Lucy stood in the doorway, her breath catching in her throat. In all the four months she had worked in this house, she had never seen Matteo sit on the floor. She had seen him kiss Emma's forehead before leaving for midnight meetings, and she had seen him stand at the edge of the room watching her draw, but this was different. He looked like a father. Just a father.

Matteo looked up, his dark eyes locking onto Lucy. The relaxed expression on his face faded slightly, replaced by that familiar, impenetrable composure.

"Miss Vance," he said, rising smoothly from the floor without using his hands for support. "You are awake."

"I am so sorry, Mr. Moretti," Lucy said quickly, stepping into the room. "I didn't mean to oversleep. I should have been up an hour ago to prepare Emma's lunch—"

"I instructed Mrs. Gable to prepare lunch," Matteo said, brushing a speck of dust from his knee. "And I told you to sleep until noon. You have twenty-five minutes left."

"I don't need twenty-five minutes," Lucy said, her cheeks warming under his intense gaze. She walked over to Emma and knelt beside her, placing a gentle hand on the child's forehead. Her skin was cool and soft. The fever was completely gone. "How are you feeling, sweet girl?"

"Lucy!" Emma squeaked, dropping her wooden teapot and throwing her tiny arms around Lucy’s neck. "Daddy played tea party with me! He said Mr. Bear has big feet like him!"

Lucy laughed—a genuine, warm sound that filled the high-ceilinged room—and hugged the little girl tightly. "Did he now? Well, I think Mr. Bear is very lucky to have tea with you."

Over Emma's head, Lucy looked up at Matteo. He was standing a few feet away, watching them with an intensity that made Lucy’s heart skip a beat. There was something different in his eyes today—something heavy, resolved, and fiercely protective.

"Lucy," Matteo said quietly. "Step into my study for a moment, please. Emma, stay here with Mrs. Gable. She is bringing up your cinnamon toast."

Lucy’s smile froze. The phantom terror of her morning phone call returned with terrifying force. Her stomach dropped like a lead weight.

He knows, she thought frantically, her hands trembling slightly as she stood up. Vane called the house. Or the garnishment papers arrived.

She followed Matteo out of the playroom and down the grand staircase to his private study—a vast, dark room paneled in mahogany and lined with thousands of leather-bound books. A massive desk of carved oak sat before a roaring stone fireplace.

Matteo walked behind the desk, but he didn't sit down. He stood with his back to the fire, his hands tucked loosely into his trousers pockets.

Lucy remained standing near the heavy oak door, her hands clutched tightly in front of her skirt. "Mr. Moretti... if this is about my personal background, I can explain—"

"Sit down, Lucy," he said softly.

It was the first time he had ever called her Lucy during the day.

She hesitated, then walked over and sat on the edge of one of the heavy leather armchairs facing his desk. She kept her back straight, her chin up, trying desperately to maintain the dignity she had spent a lifetime building.

Matteo reached down and pulled a thick white envelope from the drawer of his desk. He laid it flat on the leather blotter between them.

"At eight o'clock this morning," Matteo began, his voice calm and even, "Moretti Enterprises acquired the entire debt asset portfolio of a firm called Vanguard Capital."

Lucy stopped breathing. The blood rushed to her ears with the roar of a jet engine.

"By nine-thirty," Matteo continued, "my legal team filed an injunction against the firm for predatory lending violations, systemic extortion, and illegal harassment. The firm's assets have been frozen by the state attorney general's office. The director—a man who goes by the name of Vane—is currently in federal custody being questioned about his connections to illegal waterfront syndicates."

Lucy stared at the envelope on the desk. She couldn't move. She couldn't process the words. "What... what are you saying?"

"I am saying," Matteo said, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the dark wood of the desk, "that your debt no longer exists with Vanguard Capital."

May you like

"I... I don't understand," she whispered, her voice cracking. "My debt... it was eighty-nine thousand dollars. How did you—why would you—"

"Because the man who owned that debt was using it to intimidate a member of my household," Matteo said, his dark eyes burning into hers with absolute fierce intensity. "And because no one—no one—threatens the people who keep my daughter safe."
