Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the Walls

The blade was cold against my neck, biting just hard enough into my skin to draw a microscopic drop of blood.

"Not a sound," Detective Vance rasped into my hair. His grip was an iron vice, his breath hot and foul against my ear.

Leo wriggled against my chest, letting out a muffled, frightened whimper. I shifted my hips slightly to protect the baby, keeping my mouth shut beneath Vance's gloved palm.

"Good girl," Vance sneered softly. "Always were the quiet one, weren't you, Clara? Just like your father."

Down the hall, the heavy thud of boots hitting hardwood echoed through the dark mansion, accompanied by the brutal, unsuppressed roar of Dante’s SIG Sauer. Two shots. A heavy scream. The sound of a body hitting the floor.

Dante was clearing the ground floor, moving like a demon through the dark, but he had no idea the real threat was already standing outside his safe room.

"Why are you here?" I managed to mumble against Vance's leather glove, using my tongue to push his fingers slightly away from my lips. "They said... they said you retired."

"They said a lot of things," Vance muttered, his eyes darting nervously toward the dark hallway leading to the foyer. "Your uncle Marcus owed fifteen million dollars to the O'Malley family before he went into the ground. When he died, that debt didn't vanish. It fell on me. I've been running from O'Malley's enforcers for two years."

He leaned in closer, pressing the knife slightly harder into my neck.

"Then I saw a private file cross an old buddy's desk at the precinct," Vance whispered, a sick, triumphant edge entering his tone. "A three-hundred-thousand-dollar cash settlement wire-transferred from a Moretti Holdings shell account to wipe your name off the state registry. Dante Moretti bought you out. Which means you know where he keeps his offline ledgers."

Realization crashed over me like a wave of ice water.

This wasn't an assassination attempt on Dante. It was an extortion play. Vance hadn't come to kill the Don; he had used the chaos of an O'Malley hit squad's distraction raid to slip into the house and grab the one thing Dante valued more than his life.

Me and Leo.

"I don't know anything about his ledgers," I whispered fiercely, my hands tightening around the baby. "I'm just the nanny!"

"You're the girl he paid three hundred grand for," Vance hissed. "You're his weakness, Clara. And that kid in your arms is worth fifty million on the open market. Now open the damn safe room door before I spill your blood on this concrete."

"I don't have the code," I lied, my voice trembling.

Vance shifted the knife, bringing the tip down toward Leo's small shoulder. "Don't play games with me, girl! I watched you through the security monitors for twenty minutes before I cut the main breakers. I saw him hand you the backup keycard yesterday!"

My mind raced. He was right. Yesterday afternoon, Dante had pressed an encrypted keycard into my palm, telling me to keep it inside my brassiere in case the electronic keypads were compromised.

"Okay! Okay!" I gasped, tears of terror burning my eyes. "It's in my collar! Just let me reach it!"

"Slowly," Vance growled, loosening his grip on my mouth just an inch.

I reached up with my right hand, sliding my fingers beneath the neck of my uniform sweater as if reaching for the hidden card. But I wasn't reaching for plastic.

Inside my small breast pocket was the seven-inch stainless-steel surgical tweezers I had used to save Leo three weeks ago. I had carried them in my pocket every single day since, a subconscious security blanket from my nursing life.

My fingers closed around the cold, textured steel handle.

"Hurry up!" Vance barked, leaning his head forward over my shoulder to watch my hand.

I didn't pull out the keycard.

With every ounce of strength in my body, I whipped my hand backward, driving the long, sharp metal tips of the surgical tweezers backward into Vance's right eye socket.

A wet, sickening crunch echoed in the dark corridor.

Vance let out a blood-curdling shriek of agony, dropping the knife as he reeled backward, clutching his face with both hands, blood spurting through his fingers.

"You bitch!" he screamed, stumbling into the dark wall.

I didn't hesitate. I turned, slammed my body against the heavy steel door of the safe room, pulled the encrypted keycard from my collar, and swiped it through the hidden scanner beneath the doorframe.

The scanner beeped green. The massive six-inch steel door hissed open.

I threw myself inside, pulled Leo into the corner, and slammed the heavy manual lock wheel on the inside of the door.

CLANG.

The deadbolts shot into place.

Outside, Vance was screaming, pounding his fists against the reinforced steel, his muffled curses vibrating through the four-inch armor plating.

"I'm going to kill you, Clara!" he roared from the hall. "I'm going to rip that kid out of your hands and—"

His voice was cut short by three sudden, deafening BOOMS that echoed through the steel door.

Then, complete silence.

Ten seconds passed. My heart was hammering so hard against my ribs I thought my chest would crack. I held Leo, pressing his face against my neck, whispering nonsensical reassurances while my whole body shook.

A low, mechanical hum sounded from the safe room's internal comm system mounted on the wall.

BEEP.

Dante’s voice came through the small speaker—deep, cold, and entirely devoid of mercy.

"Clara."

I scrambled toward the wall panel, hitting the intercom button with a trembling hand. "Dante! Dante, are you okay? He was here! Vance was here!"

"I know," Dante’s voice came through, calm and quiet. "He’s gone now."

There was a long pause on the static line. I could hear the faint sound of heavy rain hitting the roof above, accompanied by the distinct smell of ozone and burning copper drifting through the air vents.

"Is Leo hurt?" Dante asked.

"No," I cried out, a sob finally breaking through my chest. "He's fine. He's safe. I kept him safe."

"Open the door, Clara."

I grabbed the heavy manual wheel, turning it counterclockwise until the steel bolts retracted with a loud thud. I pushed the heavy door open.

Dante stood in the corridor.

Emergency red backup lights had finally kicked on overhead, casting long, crimson shadows down the concrete hallway. Dante was soaked in sweat and rain, his white dress shirt torn at the shoulder, covered in dark blood splatters that weren't his own. He held a silenced tactical submachine gun in his right hand, the barrel smoking slightly in the cool air.

At his feet lay Detective Robert Vance, motionless, his threat ended permanently.

Dante dropped the weapon to his side, stepped over the body without looking at it, and walked straight into the safe room. He reached down, wrapped his massive arms around both me and Leo, pulling us up off the floor and crushing us against his chest.

I buried my face into his neck, not caring about the blood on his shirt, not caring about the stench of cordite. I held onto him like a woman drowning in a violent sea, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against my cheek.

"I've got you," Dante whispered into my hair, his arms trembling slightly as he held us. "I've got you both. It's over."

"He knew who I was," I sobbed into his neck. "He said you paid three hundred thousand dollars for me... he said I was your weakness..."

Dante pulled back slightly, his hands framing my face, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned through the red gloom of the emergency lights.

"He was wrong about one thing," Dante said softly, his thumb wiping a tear from my cheek. "You're not my weakness, Clara."

He leaned down, pressing his lips firmly against mine.

The kiss was hot, fierce, and filled with a raw, possessive hunger that took my breath away. It wasn't gentle. It was the kiss of a man who had fought through hell to claim what belonged to him. My hands instinctively wrapped around his neck, my fingers tangling in his dark hair as I kissed him back, letting go of two years of fear, isolation, and loneliness.

When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against mine, his deep breath warming my lips.

"You're my strength," Dante whispered.

Behind us, Viktor, the security chief, appeared in the doorway, his arm in a sling, his face pale.

"Don Moretti," Viktor said gravelly. "The perimeter is secure. Eight O'Malley men down. But the city police... someone called in a shots-fired report from the main road. Squad cars are three minutes out."

Dante didn't turn around. He kept his eyes fixed on mine.

"Let them come," Dante said coldly. "Clean the floor. Call the District Attorney. Tell him Marcus Vance's old partner just tried to kidnap my heir, and his body is waiting in my basement."

May you like

He took Leo from my arms, then reached down and took my hand, lacing his fingers securely through mine.

"Pack your things, Clara," Dante said, walking us out of the basement toward the grand staircase. "We're leaving for the estate in Lake Geneva tonight. The war with the O'Malleys starts now."
