Chapter 3 - The Price of Treachery

By the end of the week, the full scope of the Vance family's deception had been laid bare by Daniel Mercer’s forensic accounting team. The revelations were more monstrous than Emily could have ever imagined.

Sitting in Daniel’s sleek downtown office, surrounded by stacks of bank statements and court documents, Emily listened as the attorney broke down the numbers. The physical pain from her injuries had begun to fade into a dull ache, but the emotional scars were being ripped open anew with every page.

"Your grandfather’s estate was worth roughly three million dollars at the time of his passing," Daniel explained, sliding a neatly organized spreadsheet across the desk. "He possessed a beautifully preserved historical property on the north side of the city, a diverse stock portfolio, and a liquid trust fund of approximately eight hundred thousand dollars specifically earmarked for your education and future. Your parents were named as temporary executors, under the strict assumption that they would manage it until you turned twenty-five."

Emily traced a finger down the column of numbers. "And what's left?"

"The property is still standing, thankfully, though they have neglected it terribly," Daniel said, his brow furrowed. "But the liquid trust fund? They have systematically drained nearly six hundred thousand dollars over the last six years. They forged your signature on monthly withdrawal authorizations. Look at the dates, Emily."

Emily looked closely. The largest withdrawals perfectly coincided with Ethan’s life milestones. A fifty-thousand-dollar lump sum was taken out the exact month Ethan graduated from college—a graduation Emily wasn't allowed to attend because she had to cover Ethan’s shifts at the family's request. Another hundred thousand was withdrawn to pay off Ethan’s credit card debts and fund his lavish wedding. Most recently, a massive sum had been extracted to pay the down payment on Ethan’s suburban home and buy his son a state-of-the-art playground set for the backyard.

They had built a life of luxury and comfort for their golden child, entirely funded by the stolen blood, sweat, and tears of the daughter they treated like a servant.

"They didn't just steal money, Daniel," Emily said, her voice hollow. "They stole my twenties. They stole the nights I could have slept instead of working. They stole my peace of mind."

"I know, my dear," Daniel said softly, reaching across the desk to place a comforting hand over hers. "But here is the turning point. Because they used forged documents to access a trust fund that was federally protected under a probate seal, this elevates the crime to grand larceny and bank fraud. The District Attorney is already preparing an indictment. And because the bank accounts are frozen, they cannot liquidate any remaining assets to pay for a high-powered defense."

Before Emily could process the gravity of the legal storm heading toward her family, Daniel’s assistant knocked gently on the door and stepped in.

"Mr. Mercer, Detective Miller is on the line. She says it’s urgent regarding Richard Vance."

Daniel immediately picked up the phone, putting it on speaker. "Detective Miller, I have Emily here with me. What’s the update?"

"We’ve apprehended Richard Vance," the detective’s voice crackled through the phone. "He attempted to flee the jurisdiction. He was stopped at the state line driving his wife’s SUV, which was loaded down with packed suitcases, jewelry, and several expensive electronics. He resisted arrest, but he is currently in custody at the precinct. He’s being held without bail due to the flight risk."

Emily let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for days. Her father was behind bars. The terrifying, looming shadow that had dominated her childhood was finally locked in a cell where his belt couldn't reach her.

"What about Eleanor and Ethan?" Daniel asked.

"Eleanor is currently at their residence, but she is being monitored. Ethan has been served with a subpoena for questioning regarding his knowledge of the fraudulent funds," Detective Miller replied. "We found records indicating that Ethan’s personal bank account received direct monthly transfers from the stolen trust fund. He’s claiming he had no idea where the money came from, but his name is on several of the forged authorization documents as a witness. He’s deep in this, Mr. Mercer."

"Thank you, Detective. Please keep us informed," Daniel said before hanging up.

He turned to Emily, a grim smile on his face. "The wheels of justice turn slowly, Emily, but when they finally catch up, they crush everything in their path. Your family thought they could exploit you forever because you were kind, patient, and forgiving. They mistook your grace for weakness."

"I used to think that forgiving them was the only way to keep the peace," Emily said, looking out the window at the sprawling city below. "But I realize now that they didn't want peace. They wanted compliance. They wanted an object they could use whenever they needed something, and discard when they were done."

She stood up, smoothing down her blouse. The badge for Northshore Children's Rehabilitation Center was still clipped proudly to her pocket. "I have to get back to the clinic. I have an afternoon session with Maya."

"Go," Daniel said, his eyes warm with admiration. "Focus on the children, Emily. Focus on healing. Let me handle the destruction of the people who hurt you."
