Chapter 2 - The Woman His Enemies Noticed

Lily woke at nine-thirteen.

Claire knew the exact time because the first thing the little girl did was lift her head, blink at the clock and whisper, “Did I really sleep that long?”

“You did.”

Lily looked astonished.

Then suspicious.

“Did you leave?”

“No.”

“Did Daddy?”

Claire hesitated.

“He had to go downstairs.”

Lily’s face fell.

But before fear could take hold, footsteps sounded outside.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

Lily’s entire expression changed.

“Daddy!”

Adrian crossed the room immediately.

Lily scrambled away from Claire and threw herself into his arms.

Adrian caught her.

The movement looked almost awkward, as though he still feared grief had made his daughter fragile.

Lily wrapped both arms around his neck.

“You stayed.”

“For a while.”

“You came back.”

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

“Yes.”

Claire turned away, pretending to straighten the blanket.

She did not want him to know she understood how important that answer was.

Twenty minutes later, Lily was eating pancakes in bed while Adrian took a phone call near the window.

Claire gathered empty medicine cups and tissues.

She was nearly at the door when Adrian covered the phone.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“You told me I had the day off.”

“I did.”

“That usually involves leaving work.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“There was an incident downstairs.”

“I heard.”

“I’d prefer you remain here.”

“That doesn’t sound like a day off.”

“Consider yourself a guest.”

Claire almost laughed.

“I’m the nanny.”

“Today you’re a guest.”

“I don’t think guests are generally ordered not to leave.”

Adrian looked irritated.

Claire suspected very few people pointed out contradictions in his commands.

Lily shoved a piece of pancake into her mouth.

“Claire can stay with us.”

Both adults turned.

Lily smiled.

Problem solved.

Adrian returned to his call.

Claire stayed.

She learned about Vincent Vale later that afternoon.

Not because Adrian explained.

Because Mrs. Walsh did.

Vale’s father had once controlled several freight unions along Boston Harbor.

The Mercers and Vales had been business partners decades earlier.

Then rivals.

Then enemies.

When Adrian took control of Mercer Holdings, he eliminated most of the family’s illegal businesses and negotiated legitimate contracts that left Vale’s organization struggling.

Vincent Vale believed Adrian had stolen an empire that should have belonged to both families.

“What did he want this morning?” Claire asked.

Mrs. Walsh glanced toward the kitchen doorway before lowering her voice.

“Money. Property. Respect. Men like Mr. Vale rarely know the difference.”

“Why did Mr. Mercer tell me not to leave?”

Mrs. Walsh became very still.

“Because Vale saw you.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

“You were at the upstairs railing for perhaps three seconds.”

Claire remembered.

While Lily was still sleeping, Claire had stepped into the hallway when she heard shouting.

She had looked down.

Adrian stood near the entrance.

Across from him was a silver-haired man in an expensive coat.

Beside the man stood someone younger.

Dark suit.

Cold smile.

The younger man looked up.

Their eyes met.

Claire had stepped back immediately.

“That was Vincent’s son, Julian,” Mrs. Walsh said.

“And?”

“And people around Mr. Mercer become valuable to those who dislike him.”

“I’m an employee.”

Mrs. Walsh gave her a sad look.

“Mr. Vale may not believe that.”

Claire thought of Adrian’s hand around hers.

She felt ridiculous for even remembering it.

“Nothing happened.”

Mrs. Walsh said nothing.

“Lily was between us.”

Still nothing.

Claire frowned.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I’ve worked here twenty-six years.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“I have watched Mr. Mercer speak to senators, judges, billionaires and men who would gladly kill him.”

Claire waited.

“I have never watched him look at anyone the way he looked at you this morning.”

Heat rose into Claire’s face.

“That’s absurd.”

“Possibly.”

“It was a difficult night.”

“Yes.”

“He was worried about Lily.”

“Of course.”

“I’m her nanny.”

Mrs. Walsh smiled slightly.

“Then there’s nothing to worry about.”

Claire disliked how unconvincing that sounded.

For the next week, Adrian changed.

Not dramatically.

Adrian Mercer did very little dramatically.

He simply appeared more often.

Breakfast on Tuesday.

Dinner on Wednesday.

Half of a bedtime story Thursday.

On Friday, Lily convinced him to build a blanket fort in the library.

Adrian stood among expensive furniture holding two sofa cushions and looking as though someone had asked him to dismantle a bomb.

“This cannot possibly be structurally sound,” he said.

Claire stared at him.

“It’s a blanket fort.”

“The left side is collapsing.”

“It’s supposed to.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s six.”

Lily giggled from beneath a blanket.

Adrian looked at Claire.

“Your construction standards are disturbing.”

Claire smiled.

“So fire me.”

His gaze held hers a moment too long.

“No.”

The answer became quiet.

Claire looked away first.

Life began slipping into the mansion.

Lily laughed more.

Adrian stayed longer.

Claire found herself dreading the end of each shift.

That frightened her.

She knew men like Adrian Mercer existed in a world entirely separate from hers.

He lived behind gates.

Claire rented a one-bedroom apartment above a laundromat.

He wore watches worth more than everything she owned.

She still calculated grocery prices before reaching the register.

More importantly, Adrian carried danger around him like a second shadow.

Claire did not want danger.

She wanted stability.

A reliable paycheck.

Enough savings to stop panicking whenever her car made an unfamiliar sound.

But the heart rarely respected sensible plans.

One Friday afternoon, Claire took Lily to the Boston Public Garden.

Two Mercer security men accompanied them at a distance.

Claire hated it.

Lily treated them as furniture.

They bought hot chocolate and watched people skate on the frozen lagoon.

For almost an hour, everything felt normal.

Then Lily saw the toy store across the street.

“Please?”

Claire smiled.

“One thing.”

“Two.”

“One.”

“One big thing?”

“Nice try.”

They crossed with one guard ahead and another behind.

Inside the store, Lily disappeared into an aisle filled with stuffed animals.

Claire followed.

She did not notice the man near the entrance until he spoke.

“Ms. Bennett.”

Claire froze.

Julian Vale smiled.

He looked younger than she remembered.

Maybe thirty-five.

Expensive coat.

Perfect hair.

Nothing threatening about him except his eyes.

Claire stepped toward Lily.

“Do I know you?”

“No.”

“Then don’t use my name.”

His smile widened.

“I understand what Adrian sees.”

Claire’s skin crawled.

“You need to leave.”

“I’m shopping.”

“You followed us.”

“No. Boston is small.”

The security guard appeared at the end of the aisle.

Julian raised both hands.

“Relax.”

Lily peeked around Claire.

“Who’s that?”

“Nobody.”

Julian’s gaze moved to the child.

The guard immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Vale. Outside.”

Julian looked amused.

Then his attention returned to Claire.

“Tell Adrian his weakness is becoming visible.”

Claire’s blood turned cold.

The guard moved closer.

Julian walked away.

Claire did not realize she was shaking until Lily touched her hand.

“Claire?”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re scared.”

“No.”

Lily frowned.

Claire remembered her own rule.

Never give a child pretty lies.

“Yes,” she corrected. “A little.”

Lily squeezed her fingers.

“I’m here.”

Claire nearly cried.

They returned to the mansion immediately.

Adrian was waiting inside before their SUV fully stopped.

Claire had never seen him move so quickly.

The front door opened.

He came down the steps without a coat.

“Lily.”

“I’m okay, Daddy.”

He checked her anyway.

Face.

Hands.

Shoulders.

Then his eyes found Claire.

“What happened?”

She explained.

His expression became colder with every sentence.

When she repeated Julian’s words, Adrian looked toward his security chief.

“Get Lily inside.”

“Daddy?”

“Go with Mrs. Walsh.”

Lily hesitated.

Claire nodded.

“It’s okay.”

The moment Lily disappeared, Adrian turned on his men.

“You allowed Vale within ten feet of them?”

“He entered through the east door.”

“Then why was the east door uncovered?”

“Mr. Mercer—”

“I’m not interested in excuses.”

Claire touched his arm.

Adrian stopped instantly.

Everyone noticed.

Claire removed her hand.

“She’s safe.”

His eyes dropped to where she had touched him.

Then returned to her face.

“He threatened you.”

“He said words.”

“You think words aren’t threats?”

“I think terrifying everyone around you won’t change what happened.”

The security men avoided looking at her.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what Vale is capable of.”

“Then explain it.”

His jaw tightened.

“Not here.”

He led Claire into his office and closed the door.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the snowy lawn.

Claire remained standing.

Adrian walked behind his desk but did not sit.

“Vale has been trying to destabilize my company for three years.”

“Why?”

“Because legitimate Mercer contracts destroyed the leverage his family had on the docks.”

“Is he dangerous?”

“Yes.”

“How dangerous?”

Adrian hesitated.

“That’s not an answer.”

“He has people hurt.”

Claire stared at him.

“Has he killed people?”

Adrian did not respond.

That was enough.

Claire’s pulse accelerated.

“I need to go.”

His face changed.

“Where?”

“Home.”

“No.”

“I can’t stay here.”

“You’re safer here.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Adrian came around the desk.

“Claire.”

“I took this job to care for Lily. I didn’t agree to become leverage in some war between powerful men.”

“You won’t.”

“Julian already used my name.”

“I’ll handle Julian.”

“That sentence is exactly why I’m afraid.”

He stopped.

Claire breathed unsteadily.

“I love Lily.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Adrian’s eyes shifted.

Claire continued.

“I love that little girl. But I cannot become part of whatever this is.”

“You already are.”

The words landed like a door locking.

Claire stared.

Adrian seemed to regret them immediately.

“That came out wrong.”

“No. I think it came out exactly right.”

She turned toward the door.

“Claire.”

She stopped but did not look back.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes, I can.”

She faced him.

“That’s the problem, Adrian. You think control is the same thing as safety.”

It was the first time she had called him Adrian.

The silence afterward felt enormous.

He slowly crossed the room.

Claire should have stepped back.

She didn’t.

“I know you’re afraid of me,” he said.

“I’m not sure that’s what I’m afraid of anymore.”

His eyes searched hers.

Claire hated how much truth had slipped into that sentence.

Adrian lifted one hand, paused, then gently moved a loose strand of hair from her cheek.

The touch was brief.

Careful.

Nothing like the man Boston feared.

Claire stopped breathing.

Then an alarm sounded.

Sharp.

Electronic.

Adrian’s hand dropped.

The office lights changed.

His security chief shouted from the hallway.

“Mr. Mercer!”

Adrian opened the door.

“What?”

“We’ve got a vehicle through the north gate.”

Claire’s blood went cold.

“Lily?”

Adrian was already moving.

“Lock down the house.”

Claire followed him into the hallway.

“Where is Lily?”

Mrs. Walsh’s voice came from the stairs.

“She was in the conservatory.”

Was.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“What do you mean was?”

Mrs. Walsh looked terrified.

“She isn’t there now.”

Adrian went completely still.

The mansion filled with running footsteps.

Security doors began closing.

Claire heard men shouting into radios.

She thought about Lily.

A frightened six-year-old who hated closed doors.

A child who hid when adults became loud.

Claire suddenly knew exactly where she would go.

“The blanket fort.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

“She’s scared. She’ll hide somewhere that feels familiar.”

Claire ran.

Adrian followed.

They reached the library together.

The room appeared empty.

Claire dropped to her knees beside the collapsed fort they had built days earlier.

“Lily?”

Nothing.

Then a tiny sound.

Claire lifted the blanket.

Lily was underneath the table, hugging her knees.

“Claire.”

Claire crawled inside.

Lily threw herself against her.

Adrian appeared moments later.

The relief on his face was so powerful it almost broke Claire’s heart.

He crouched beside them.

Lily looked at him.

“Are bad people coming?”

Adrian hesitated.

Claire silently begged him not to lie.

“Yes,” he finally said. “Someone tried.”

Lily’s lip trembled.

“Are you leaving?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

Then back at his daughter.

“No.”

He crawled beneath the blanket fort in a thousand-dollar suit and sat on the floor beside them.

“I’m staying right here.”

Outside, armed security searched the estate.

Inside, Lily took one of Claire’s hands and one of Adrian’s.

And for the second time, she joined them together.

May you like

This time, neither adult pulled away.
