Chapter 6 - The Empire We Built

Three years later.

The rain over New York City fell in thick, heavy sheets, drumming a steady, soothing rhythm against the reinforced glass of the penthouse suite atop the Moretti Tower in lower Manhattan.

From the fifty-fourth floor, the skyline looked like a circuit board of glittering neon lights and shimmering towers. Every single building, shipping dock, rail terminal, and financial hub in this view answered to one name.

Moretti.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a cup of steaming green tea, watching the city breathe below me. The fear that had once defined my existence—the constant, grinding terror of rent hikes, empty cupboards, and dodging loan sharks—was nothing more than a bad dream from another lifetime.

Behind me, the sound of soft, rapid footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.

“Mommy! Mommy, look! I finished the portrait!”

I turned around just in time as nine-year-old Emma rocketed into the room, clutching a heavy sketchpad with both hands. Her dark hair was tied back with a blue velvet ribbon, and she wore a smart private school uniform that cost more than my first car.

She shoved the sketchpad up toward my face.

On the page was a remarkably talented charcoal drawing of a massive, roaring black panther standing protectively over a smaller cat and a tiny, fierce-looking kitten holding a rag doll.

“Oh, sweetheart, this is incredible,” I gasped, kneeling down to look her in the eye. “You’ve really captured the shading on the fur. Where did you learn to blend like this?”

“Uncle Enzo showed me how to use the soft pencils,” Emma beamed proudly. “And Daddy said if I get an A in geometry this semester, he’ll take me to the private stables in Westchester to pick out my own horse!”

“Did he now?” a deep, familiar voice rumbled from the doorway.

Damiano stepped into the suite, shaking the rain off his dark wool overcoat and handing it to an attendant waiting quietly in the hall. He looked every bit the billionaire tycoon and syndicate patriarch, but the moment his eyes landed on Emma and me, the hard, impenetrable armor of The Ghost of New York melted away entirely.

He walked across the room, scooped Emma up into his arms with effortless strength, and tossed her gently into the air, making the little girl shriek with delighted laughter.

“You’re spoiling her, Damiano,” I said, walking over to hand him a cup of black coffee just the way he liked it. “Next thing you know, she’ll be demanding a private jet for her birthday party.”

“She doesn't need to demand a private jet,” Damiano smiled, setting Emma down gently on her feet and sending her off to her playroom to show Enzo her drawing. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, burying his face in the crook of my neck. “If our daughter wants a private jet, I’ll buy her an airline.”

I rested my hands against his broad shoulders, breathing in his familiar cedarwood scent.

“You’ve gone soft, Mr. Moretti,” I teased softly, tracing the silver hairs at his temples. “The five dons are probably holding a secret meeting right now, complaining that their ruthless overlord spends too much time helping a nine-year-old with her math homework.”

“Let them complain,” Damiano murmured, kissing the shell of my ear, sending a delicious warmth spreading through my veins. “Let them whisper whatever they want behind my back. They know who owns the city. And they know who holds the key to my house.”

He pulled back slightly, looking down into my eyes with an intensity that still made my breath catch, even after three years of marriage, three years of shared nights, and an empire built on blood and survival.

“Three years ago,” Damiano whispered, his thumb gently tracing my cheekbone, “you walked into my office with a tray of champagne glasses, trying to scrape by on pennies in a world of wolves.”

“And you were about to be blown to pieces by the woman you planned to marry,” I reminded him with a soft smile.

“Until my little girl walked up, tugged on my sleeve, and showed me what a real family looked like,” Damiano finished, capturing my lips in a deep, slow, possessive kiss that blotted out the rain, the city, and the shadows of our past.

We had survived the betrayals, the bombs, and the endless war for the crown. We hadn't just conquered the underworld—we had rewritten it from the ground up, with a queen in the boardroom, a king in the shadows, and a little girl holding the keys to the kingdom.
