Chapter 5 - The Corporate Siege

The marble floor of the penthouse suddenly felt like thin ice over a frozen lake.

Marcus Vance strode into the living room with the arrogant, predatory swagger of a man who believed he held all the high cards. His silver-streaked hair was impeccably styled, his custom-tailored navy suit contrasting sharply against the minimalist modernism of my apartment. Behind him, District Attorney Richard Sterling adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking around the expansive living room with the clinical curiosity of a coroner inspecting a fresh corpse.

"Well, well, well," Marcus drawled, his voice dripping with condescension as he stopped ten feet away from my chair. "Look at the mighty Luca Moretti. Ruling his little concrete kingdom, playing domestic hero with a runaway wife and a secret kid. Did you really think you could fly half the country under the radar, little brother?"

I didn't flinch. I didn't even stand up. I simply crossed my legs, resting my elbow on the armrest of the leather chair, letting an icy, dangerous stillness wash over my entire posture.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously smooth. "You must have a death wish to walk uninvited into my home at eleven o'clock at night."

"Oh, put the mobster act away, Luca," Marcus laughed, waving a dismissive hand in the air. "We're out of the boardroom now. And this time, you don't have the liquidity to buy your way out of the mess you've stepped into."

District Attorney Sterling stepped forward, holding out the heavy parchment document like a sword.

"Luca Moretti," Sterling recited, his tone flat and official. "You are hereby served with a federal grand jury subpoena stemming from a multi-jurisdictional investigation into offshore shell corporations, municipal zoning fraud, and asset concealment connected to your recent acquisition of the waterfront district in downtown Manhattan."

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the federal document in horror. "Federal grand jury? Luca, what is this?!"

I didn't take my eyes off my brother. I knew every move Marcus made before he even finished thinking about it.

"Let me guess," I said softly, a cold smile touching the corners of my mouth. "Marcus offered your office all the falsified paper trails his accounting firm could fabricate, promising to hand over a golden goose if you agreed to indict me right before the city council votes on the waterfront development next Tuesday."

Sterling’s eyes flicked nervously for a split second—just long enough to confirm my hypothesis.

"Your corporate empire is over, Luca," Marcus sneered, stepping closer. "The board of directors is already calling an emergency vote for tomorrow morning. With you indicted on federal fraud charges and tied up in criminal court, Vance Global will acquire your real estate portfolio for pennies on the dollar. By next week, you won't even have enough money to buy a cup of coffee, let alone fund your secret little family reunion."

He looked over at Elena, his expression curdling into utter contempt. "And as for you, my dear former sister-in-law... you picked the wrong horse to hitch your wagon to. He's going down, and he's taking you and that bastard child down with him."

The moment the word child left my brother's mouth, the temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

Something inside me snapped—not with a wild, chaotic explosion, but with the cold, final click of a guillotine blade dropping into place.

Marcus had crossed the line. He had brought my daughter into his corporate war.

"You shouldn't have said that, Marcus," I whispered.

Before Marcus could react, I stood up from my chair with explosive speed. Before his security detail could even reach for their holsters, I closed the distance between us in three long strides, grabbed him by the lapels of his custom Italian suit, and slammed him hard against the floor-to-ceiling glass wall of the penthouse.

The double-paned reinforced glass shuddered violently under the impact, bowing outward toward the Chicago skyline six hundred feet below.

Marcus let out a strangled gasp, his face turning the color of wet chalk as my fingers tightened around his collar, lifting his heels an inch off the marble floor.

"Luca! Stop!" Sterling shouted, fumbling for his phone. "That's assault on an officer of the court—I'll have you arrested this instant!"

"Go ahead, Sterling," I snarled, not looking away from my terrified brother. "Call your little task force. But before you do, check your encrypted email inbox."

Sterling froze, his phone hovering in mid-air. "What?"

"Check your email, you corrupt hack," I repeated, my voice vibrating with lethal calm. "While you and my dear brother were busy forging shell corporation paper trails, my cyber-security division was busy downloading every single wire transfer, offshore bribe receipt, and backroom quid-pro-quo text message exchanged between Marcus Vance and your reelection campaign committee over the last four years."

Sterling’s face drained of every drop of blood. The phone slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the marble floor.

"That's... that's impossible," Sterling stammered, backing away toward the elevator doors. "You don't have those files—"

"I have everything, Sterling," I said, releasing my grip on Marcus and letting him slump unceremoniously onto the floor like a broken sack of laundry. I smoothed down the front of my shirt, stepping over my brother as if he were nothing more than a discarded piece of trash on the sidewalk.

"If that grand jury subpoena isn't permanently rescinded, shredded, and thrown into an incinerator by 8:00 AM tomorrow morning," I continued, staring down at the trembling district attorney, "those files go straight to the US Attorney General, the FBI's public corruption unit, and every major news outlet from here to Wall Street. You'll be sharing a prison cell with embezzlers before the weekend."

Sterling didn't answer. He turned on his heel, slammed the elevator call button with desperate, frantic slaps, and dove into the car the second the doors slid open, dragging a bruised and gasping Marcus Vance in right behind him.

The doors closed. The elevator dropped like a stone.

And silence reclaimed the penthouse.
