Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Estate

Two weeks later.

The Vale estate in Lake Forest looked less like a home and more like a fortress straight out of a European fairy tale.

Wrought-iron gates flanked by stone lions opened onto a half-mile driveway lined with towering oaks. Inside the grand ballroom, crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, casting sparkling light across polished marble floors.

There were no politicians. There were no syndicate bosses. There were no reporters from the financial papers.

Instead, the room was filled with laughter, the clinking of champagne glasses, and the pitter-patter of small sneakers running across the marble floor.

It wasn't a wedding. It was something far better—a celebration of a new beginning.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling bay windows, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress, watching Lucas chase a golden retriever puppy across the lawn while Leo proudly showed off his collection of smooth stones to Mrs. Gable, the estate’s longtime head housekeeper.

Chloe was sitting on the grand piano bench, her fingers stumbling over the keys while Adrian sat right beside her, patiently guiding her small hands to play a simple melody.

He looked up, catching my eye across the room.

Even after everything we had survived—the secrecy, the fear, the sudden, violent clash with the syndicate council—the look he gave me made my breath hitch, exactly the way it had four years ago when we first met.

Adrian whispered something to Chloe, kissed the top of her head, and walked across the ballroom toward me, weaving through the small clusters of guests.

“You look breathtaking,” he murmured, stopping inches away. His hand reached out, gently tucking a stray curl behind my ear, his thumb brushing my jawline.

“And you look entirely too happy for a man who just dismantled a fifty-year-old mafia alliance,” I teased softly, though a smile broke across my face.

“The alliance was built on sand,” Adrian said, his gaze locking onto mine with absolute devotion. “Everything I built before today was just a monument to loneliness. My real life... my real empire... is right here.”

He pulled a small, velvet box from his pocket and flipped it open.

Inside rested a ring—not the enormous, blinding diamond he had supposedly bought for his corporate fiancée, but a delicate, vintage platinum band inlaid with three small, brilliant diamonds representing the three little lives that had brought us back together.

“I know I gave you an envelope four years ago and told you to run,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a raw, emotional whisper as he dropped to one knee right there in the middle of the ballroom, causing the entire room to fall silent and turn their attention toward us. “And I know I can never undo the years of fear and struggle I cost you.”

He looked up at me, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears.

“Maya... my heart, my soul, my home. Will you let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that you never have to run again? Will you marry me?”

Across the room, Chloe stopped playing the piano and clapped her hands together in delight, shouting, “Say yes, Mommy! The ring is so pretty!”

The guests erupted into warm, joyful laughter and applause.

I looked down at the man who had terrified a city, but who was currently kneeling before me like the most humble man on earth. The secrets were gone. The fear was buried. The past was finally put to rest.

I smiled, tears blurring my vision, and reached out my hand.

May you like

“Yes, Adrian,” I whispered, my voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “Yes, a million times yes.”

As he slid the ring onto my finger and stood up to pull me into his arms, the applause swelled around us. I looked out the window at our children playing in the sunlight, and for the first time in four years, I knew with absolute certainty that we were finally, truly home.
