Chapter 10 - THE PICTURE ON THE WALL

Late that evening, after the guests had departed and the sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving a brilliant trail of purple and orange across the Pacific ocean, the Mercer estate was quiet.

Grant walked softly down the long hallway toward the master suite.

He passed the master annex—Claire’s room. The door was wide open, welcoming, filled with sunlight during the day and warm lamplight at night. It was no longer a forbidden sanctuary or a room of secret pain; it was a beautiful library and memory room where Emma often went to read, look at photos of her mother, and play with Claire’s oil paints.

Grant reached Emma’s bedroom and pushed the door open gently.

Sarah was sitting on the edge of Emma’s bed, finishing reading a storybook. Emma was leaning against Sarah’s shoulder, her eyes heavy with sleep, her small fingers gently twisting a strand of Sarah’s hair.

"All tucked in?" Grant asked softly, leaning against the doorframe.

"Almost," Sarah whispered, smiling up at him. She kissed Emma’s forehead, closed the book, and set it on the nightstand beside the restored porcelain music box. "Goodnight, my sweet girl."

"Goodnight, Mommy Sarah," Emma mumbled sleepily, pulling her yellow blanket up to her chin.

Sarah’s heart swelled. She looked up at Grant, her eyes glistening with sweet emotion, before softly quietly exiting the room to give father and daughter their nightly moment.

Grant walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached out and wound the small golden key of the porcelain music box three times.

The gentle French lullaby began to play, its crystal-clear notes floating through the peaceful room.

Grant looked up at the wall above Emma’s bed.

Framed in a thick, beautifully carved wooden frame was a piece of heavy cream cardstock.

It was not the dark, terrifying scribble of three years ago.

It was a brand-new drawing that Emma had finished just last week.

Rendered in bright, vibrant watercolors, it showed a large, beautiful house by the sea with sunflowers in the garden.

Standing on the green grass were four figures, all holding hands.

There was Grant, tall and smiling in blue paint.

There was Sarah, warm and radiant in yellow paint.

There was Emma, jumping with joy in bright pink paint.

And floating high in the clear blue sky above them, painted in soft, golden white, was a gentle angel with broad wings, watching over them with a warm, eternal smile—Claire.

Beneath the painting, written in clear, confident, beautiful six-year-old handwriting, were five simple words:

OUR HOME IS FULL NOW.

Grant looked down at his sleeping daughter. Her chest rose and fell in a peaceful, steady rhythm. The music box chimed its final soft note, settling into a tranquil silence.

Grant reached out, tucked a stray curl behind Emma’s ear, and smiled.

The storm had passed. The shadows were gone. And in their place, love had finally come home to stay.
