Chapter 2 - The Counter-Attack

The morning light filtering through the hospital blinds three days later brought a different kind of clarity. The intense, burning agony in my back had subsided into a dull, throbbing ache, managed by a localized epidural that allowed me to sit up for the first time. My skin was healing, but the scars would be permanent. I welcomed them. They would serve as a permanent reminder of the price I paid for my freedom.

Arthur Pendelton sat in the chair beside my bed. At seventy-two, Arthur was the grand old man of corporate litigation, my father’s closest friend, and the mentor who had guided me through my early days as a young prosecutor. He looked impeccable in his bespoke grey suit, but his eyes were filled with a mixture of profound sorrow and absolute fury.

“You should have told me, Clara,” Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly as he looked at the bandages covering my shoulders. “If I had known what that bastard was doing to you inside that house, I would have dragged him out by his throat myself.”

“If you had intervened, Arthur, he would have played the victim,” I said, my voice stronger now, filled with the cold authority I used to command in the courtroom. “Daniel is a master manipulator. He would have claimed an influential old billionaire was bullying a young, up-and-coming lawyer. He would have divorced me, taken half the marital assets, and used his connections to ruin my reputation. I needed him to dig a hole so deep he could never climb out.”

Arthur sighed, opening a thick manila folder on his lap. “Well, he’s currently sitting in a holding cell, but his legal team is moving mountains. They’ve managed to schedule an emergency bail hearing for this afternoon. They’re bringing in a high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Richard Sterling—yes, his cousin. They’re going to argue that the video footage was heavily edited, that you have a history of mental instability, and that the domestic assault charge should be reduced to a misdemeanor negligence charge.”

I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Of course they are. Richard is a predictable shark. What about the financial side?”

“That’s where the trap springs,” Arthur smiled, a predatory glint appearing in his old eyes. “As per your instructions, the moment you were admitted to the ICU, I filed an ex-parte emergency injunction with the Federal Bankruptcy Court and the Securities and Exchange Commission. We froze every single account associated with Daniel Sterling, his mother, and his firm.”

“How did he react?”

“He doesn't know yet,” Arthur chuckled. “His defense attorney thinks they’re just dealing with a standard domestic violence case that can be managed with a high bail and a public relations campaign. They have no idea that the moment Daniel steps out of that courtroom on bail—if he gets it—the federal marshals will be waiting for him with a twenty-count indictment for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and tax evasion.”

“Good,” I said, shifting slightly, wincing as the skin on my back pulled tight. “But I don't want him getting bail. I want him broken before the federal charges even hit him. Arthur, I need you to bring me my laptop. It’s time to leak the first breadcrumb to the media.”

Daniel had spent three years systematically destroying my social life by telling everyone I was emotionally unstable. He had ruined my reputation among our peers to ensure that if I ever spoke out, no one would believe me. It was only fitting that I used the same weapon against him—but with one crucial difference.

My weapon was the absolute truth.

By noon, a major local news outlet received an anonymous tip containing a verified transcript of the hospital room conversation captured by Dr. Ortiz’s phone, alongside a heavily blurred but deeply shocking five-second clip of the kitchen incident. The headline exploded across social media within minutes: "Prominent Local Attorney Daniel Sterling Detained: Shocking Video Evidence Contradicts 'Clumsy Housewife' Claims."

The public reaction was instantaneous and savage. In the age of social media, viral outrage moves faster than any legal process. Comments flooded the news articles, demanding justice, calling out the horrific nature of the crime, and sharing the video across every local community group on Facebook. Daniel’s law firm’s page was forced to shut down its comment section within an hour as thousands of angry citizens demanded he be fired immediately.

At 2:00 PM, the emergency bail hearing commenced. I couldn't be there physically, but Lena had set up a secure live-stream feed from the courtroom directly to my hospital monitor.

Daniel stood next to his cousin, Richard, looking vastly different from the polished man who had stepped over my body three days ago. He was wearing a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair was unwashed, and his eyes were bloodshot. The sheer pressure of the past seventy-two hours was starting to show.

“Your Honor,” Richard Sterling argued, his voice booming through the small courtroom speaker. “My client is a respected officer of the court with no prior record. The media circus surrounding this case is a coordinated smear campaign by his estranged wife, who has a documented history of psychological issues. The video evidence being circulated was obtained illegally and is highly suspect. We ask for a reasonable bail so Mr. Sterling can prepare his defense from his home.”

The prosecutor, a sharp young woman whom I had personally mentored years ago, stood up calmly. “Your Honor, the state requests that bail be denied entirely. The victim, Clara Sterling, is currently in the intensive burn unit with second and third-degree burns over thirty percent of her body. Furthermore, we have evidence to suggest the defendant represents a severe flight risk.”

“Flight risk?” Richard scoffed. “My client has deep roots in this community. His entire financial existence is tied to this city!”

“Is it?” The prosecutor smiled coldly, pulling a set of documents from her briefcase. “Because approximately two hours ago, all domestic bank accounts belonging to the defendant were frozen by federal order. Furthermore, we have intercepted a flight reservation made in the defendant's name to a non-extradition country, booked just four hours after the incident occurred, using a offshore account we are currently investigating.”

Daniel’s face went completely white. He turned to his lawyer, whispering frantically, his hands waving in desperation. Richard looked equally stunned, staring at the prosecutor’s documents as if they were written in a foreign language.

“In light of these developments,” the judge said, her voice stern and unyielding, “and given the extraordinarily violent nature of the evidence presented in the initial police report, bail is denied. The defendant will remain in custody until trial.”

The gavel banged down with a sound that felt like thunder. On the screen, Daniel collapsed back into his chair, the exact same way I had collapsed onto the kitchen floor three days prior.

I leaned back against my pillows, a cold, serene satisfaction washing over me. He was in a cage. But the real game was just beginning. The mother, Vivian, was still out there, and she was about to realize that without her son's stolen wealth, she was absolutely nothing.
