Chapter 2 - The Red Mark

Thirty seconds later, the door swung open.

Nurse Elena—a middle-aged woman with tired eyes and a silver cross around her neck who had checked my vitals an hour earlier—stepped into the room holding a tray of fresh IV bags.

She stopped dead in her tracks.

Grant was sitting on the floor, dazed, holding the side of his neck, struggling to sit up. Richard was trembling in the corner, looking twenty years older than when he had entered the building. And Samuel was standing calmly beside my bed, holding a paper cup of water for me.

“What happened in here?” Nurse Elena asked, her eyes darting frantically across the room. “Mr. Caldwell? Are you alright?”

Grant pointed a shaking finger at Samuel. “He... he assaulted me! Call the police! He attacked me!”

I took a deep, painful breath. The air scraped against my larynx, but my voice came out clear, steady, and entirely free of hesitation.

“Nurse Elena,” I said, looking her directly in the eye.

She looked at me, stepping closer to the bed. “Yes, Mrs. Caldwell?”

“My name is Allison Monroe,” I said. “And no, everything is not all right.”

I slowly pulled down the collar of my hospital gown, exposing the dark, ugly purplish-red crescent marks left by Grant’s forearm across the front of my throat.

Elena gasped, dropping the tape roll she was holding. It bounded softly across the floor and stopped against Grant’s shoe.

“My husband did this to me three hours ago while I was holding our daughter,” I said, my voice resonating in the quiet room. “He held me down until I lost consciousness because I wouldn't let him take my mother’s name off the birth registry. His father sat in that chair and watched him do it.”

The temperature in the room seemed to plummet.

Nurse Elena’s face hardened from professional detachment into sharp, fierce fury. She looked down at Grant on the floor, then at Richard in the corner, and finally at Samuel.

“I am activating the Code Pink and Security protocols immediately,” Elena said, her hand reaching for her hip radio. “Nobody leaves this room.”

“Now wait a minute!” Richard said, trying to stand up, his voice cracking. “This is a misunderstanding! My daughter-in-law is exhausted! She’s experiencing severe post-partum confusion—”

“Shut your mouth, Richard,” Samuel said, not even looking back at him.

Elena spoke into her radio with cold precision. “Station Three, this is Elena. I need Security and the House Supervisor in Room 412 immediately. Active domestic assault on a post-partum patient. Secure the floor.”

Grant scrambled to his feet, using the wall for balance. “Allison, you're crazy! You're ruining everything! Do you have any idea what this will do to the company? To the merger with Mid-West Freight?”

“The company,” I said softly, looking at my daughter’s tiny, perfect face as she slept against my chest, “is about to become very busy with other problems.”
