Chapter 4 - THE ASYLUM OF SOHO

The penthouse in SoHo smelled of sour wine and stale cigarette smoke—a sharp, jarring contrast to the pristine, minimalist luxury Marcus had always demanded.
When Elara walked through the door, accompanied by Julian and two family attorneys, she found Marcus sitting on the massive white leather sofa, his tie missing, his charcoal suit jacket tossed onto the floor. His gray eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled, looking nothing like the Developer of the Year who had stood beneath the Meridian Grand chandelier the night before.
In the corner of the room sat Khloe Vance, her mascara ruined by tears, her phone pressed to her ear as she frantically tried to reach her father’s corporate attorneys.
"Elara," Marcus stood up instantly, his voice hoarse, a desperate, pathetic hope flaring behind his eyes as he took a step toward her. "Elara, please. You have to talk to your father. This is a misunderstanding. The gala... Khloe was out of line. I was going to stop her, I swear I was—"
"You told me I was making a scene, Marcus," Elara said, her voice perfectly level as she stood near the glass entry table, not even stepping onto his carpet. "You told me it wasn't the time."
"I was stressed!" Marcus shouted, his composure cracking into raw, trembling panic. "The tower... the investors... everything I’ve worked for since Queens was riding on that night! You know what I went through to build Hayes Capital! You were there!"
"I was there," Elara said softly. "I answered the phones when you couldn't pay an assistant. I proofread the proposals at two in the morning. And when you became powerful enough to be seen, you chose a woman who liked the view from the top floor more than the foundation we dug together."
Khloe snapped her phone shut, jumping to her feet with an ugly, frantic scream. "You ruined my family! My father’s leases were cancelled this morning! We’re losing the shipping yards! You’re a monster, Elara! A spoiled, rich monster who couldn't handle the fact that her husband didn't love her anymore!"
Julian Van Allen stepped into the room, his frame completely dominating the space, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, icy heat. "One more word, Ms. Vance, and I will ensure your father’s logistics company is investigated for federal tax fraud before the sun sets. Sit down."
Khloe choked on her breath, dropping back onto the sofa like a puppet with its strings cut, her face white with terror.
Marcus fell to his knees in front of Elara, his hands reaching out to grab the hem of her cashmere sweater. "Elara... please. Sign the asset transfer. If you take the tower, I have nothing. I’ll be back in that rented office in Queens. Eight years, Elara... we loved each other once. You can't destroy me over a mistake."
Elara looked down at him. She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel revenge. She felt nothing but a profound, beautiful clarity.
May you like
"I’m not destroying you, Marcus," Elara whispered, stepping back so his hands fell empty onto the floor. "The prenuptial agreement you made me sign states that I leave with nothing. And that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m leaving you with nothing."
She turned and walked out of the penthouse, the heavy glass doors clicking shut behind her, sealing Marcus Hayes inside the empty, hollow tower he had sacrificed his soul to build.
