Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Montoya

The grand chapel on the Montoya estate was illuminated by hundreds of white beeswax candles.
At 2:00 AM, a private judge—beholden to no political faction and secured by Vance’s firm—signed the expedited marriage certificate and joint parental declaration under the seal of the Federal District Court.
Valentina wore a simple white silk dress provided by the estate’s private stylist. Around her neck hung a simple diamond pendant given to her by Rafael—not as a display of wealth, but as a symbol of the Montoya family’s absolute legal surrender to her authority.
Standing beside them at the altar was little Camila, wearing her favorite white dress, holding both of their hands. For the first time in three years, the little girl was smiling—a tiny, hesitant smile that lit up the dimly lit chapel like a sunrise.
"It is done," the judge announced, stamping the final red wax seal onto the registry. "By authority of the civil court, you are legally husband and wife, and Camila Montoya Cruz is recognized as the legitimate heir of your unified estate."
"Thank you, Your Honor," Rafael said, shaking the judge’s hand before turning to look at his new wife.
There was no grand kiss, no theatrical celebration. Rafael simply reached out, took Valentina’s right hand, and pressed his lips gently against her knuckles.
"Now," Valentina said, her dark eyes flashing with a fierce, cold resolve that mirrored her husband's. "It is time to deal with your mother."
Ten minutes later, the double doors of the estate’s grand salon swung open.
Doña Sofia sat on a gilded velvet sofa, her suitcases stacked near the entrance, her private driver standing by the door. She held a glass of scotch, her face set in a cold, bitter mask as she waited for her car to be loaded.
When she saw Rafael and Valentina step into the salon—followed by two uniformed federal officers and Alejandro Vance carrying a thick leather dossier—her glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Sofia shrieked, standing up. "Rafael! Why are there police in my house?!"
"This isn't your house anymore, Sofia," Valentina said, stepping forward. She didn't use the title Doña. She spoke the name like a judge pronouncing a sentence.
"How dare you speak to me like that, you miserable little—"
"Silence!" Rafael roared, his voice bouncing off the high frescoed ceilings. "You are speaking to my wife, the co-owner of the Montoya Group, and the sole legal guardian of Camila."
Sofia stared at them, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Wife?! You... you married her?!"
"Thirty minutes ago," Vance announced smoothly, stepping forward to hand a blue court summons directly to Sofia’s driver, who immediately dropped her bags and backed away. "And as co-chair of the Montoya Family Trust, Mrs. Valentina Montoya Cruz has just executed an emergency order liquidating your personal allowance, revoking your corporate access, and seizing your villa in Cuernavaca as restitution for illegal wire transfers."
"You can't do this!" Sofia screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic screech. "I am the matriarch of this family! I built this empire!"
"You built it on stolen children, Dr. Ramos, and Swiss bank accounts," Valentina said softly, stepping right up to the older woman, looking her straight in the eye. "I spent three years crying in a cold room in Neza because you thought my grief was cheap enough to buy. You took my baby's first words, her first steps, her first laughter."
Valentina leaned in closer, her voice dropping into an icy whisper that terrified Sofia to her very core.
"You thought I was weak because I folded napkins for a living," Valentina whispered. "Now watch me fold your entire life into a prison cell."
The federal officers stepped forward, pulling a pair of polished steel handcuffs from their belts.
"Sofia Montoya," the lead agent declared, reading from a red-stamped federal warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit human trafficking, money laundering, and illegal adoption fraud under the International Child Protection Act. You have the right to remain silent."
"Rafael!" Sofia screamed as the cold steel clicked around her manicured wrists. "Rafael, save me! Tell them it's a mistake! I did it for you! I did it for the family name!"
Rafael stood beside Valentina, his arm wrapped firmly around his wife’s waist, his face as cold and unyielding as granite.

"The family name died the day you stole my daughter, Mother," Rafael said flatly. "Take her away."
The officers pulled the weeping, screaming matriarch out through the grand gilded doors, her desperate cries fading into the cool night air until there was nothing left but absolute, beautiful silence.
