Chapter 1

Daniel stood motionless in the upstairs hallway, still holding the briefcase he had carried out of the mansion twenty minutes earlier.

His driver believed he was on his way to an important meeting.

His wife believed the house belonged entirely to her again.

But Daniel had quietly returned through the side entrance because one question had kept him awake all night.

Why did thirteen-month-old Noah cry whenever Claire picked him up, yet cling desperately to Hannah Reed, the woman hired to help around the house?

Daniel had spent months accepting easy explanations.

Hannah spent more time with the baby.

Claire was tired after a difficult delivery.

Some children simply preferred one caregiver.

Even the pediatrician had called it a temporary phase.

Then Daniel reached the nursery and heard Claire’s voice through the partially open door.

“You think you can take my place because he reaches for you?”

Inside, Hannah stood beside the crib with Noah pressed against her chest.

The child’s small fist was twisted into the collar of her gray shirt.

Claire blocked the doorway, dressed perfectly for a luncheon she had supposedly planned to attend.

Her expression was calm.

Her voice was not.

“I only picked him up because he was crying,” Hannah said.

“You called me upstairs.”

“I called you to clean the room,” Claire replied.

“Not to make my son believe you are his mother.”

Noah whimpered and buried his face against Hannah’s neck.

Hannah began rocking him gently.

The movement made Claire step closer.

“He is frightened,” Hannah said.

“He is manipulating you.”

“He is a baby.”

For one second, Claire’s polished expression cracked.

She reached forward and seized Hannah’s wrist.

“Put him down.”

Hannah did not move.

“Mrs. Mercer, please.”

“I said put him down.”

The nursery camera above the dresser had been twisted until its lens faced the pale blue wall.

Daniel had noticed it in that position twice during the previous week.

Claire had claimed the cleaning staff kept bumping it.

Now he understood that someone had moved it deliberately.

Hannah backed against the crib.

There was nowhere else to go.

Noah began screaming.

Claire tightened her grip.

Hannah winced, but instead of releasing the child, she turned her body so Noah remained shielded between her chest and the crib.

That single movement told Daniel more than any explanation could have.

Hannah was not afraid for herself.

She was afraid of what might happen if she obeyed.

Daniel pushed open the door.

“Let go of her.”

Claire released Hannah instantly.

Her entire face changed before she turned around.

The fury disappeared.

Her shoulders softened.

Even her voice became gentle.

“Daniel?”

She stared at the briefcase in his hand.

“You left for work.”

“I came back.”

Noah continued crying in Hannah’s arms.

Red marks were already appearing around her wrist.

Daniel looked from the bruises to the camera facing the wall.

Then he looked at his wife.

“What exactly did I interrupt?”

Claire folded her arms.

“I was correcting a boundary problem.”

Daniel stepped toward Hannah.

“Has this happened before?”

“No,” Claire answered immediately.

But Hannah said nothing.

She only looked at the hidden camera, then at Claire, as if one honest sentence could cost her the job that paid her mother’s medical bills.

Daniel noticed the fear in her eyes.

He lowered his voice.

“Hannah, tell me why my son is afraid.”

May you like

Her lips parted.

And the first incident she described made Daniel realize the camera had not been turned away to hide an argument.
