Chapter 4 - NIGHT AT THE ESTATE

At 1:00 AM, the Caldwell estate was blanketed in a dense, coastal fog.

Outside the security perimeter, Claire moved quietly through the shadows of the woods bordering the property. She knew the layout of the grounds intimately—she knew which security camera had a blind spot near the old greenhouse, and she knew that the latch on the ground-floor pantry window was broken.

She wasn't wearing her nanny clothes. She wore black pants, a dark hoodie, and carried a small medical kit in her backpack. She knew that what she was doing was illegal. It was breaking and entering. If caught, Ethan Caldwell’s legal team would ensure she spent years in prison.

But she couldn't erase the memory of Noah’s joyful laugh in the garden when he took those eight steps. She couldn't let that bright, beautiful little boy be slowly suffocated by a conspiracy of lies.

Claire reached the pantry window, slid her fingers under the frame, and gently lifted it up. It creaked softly, but the sound was swallowed by the hum of the central heating system. She slipped inside, landing silently on the linoleum floor.

She navigated the dark hallway, heading toward the small medical pantry adjacent to Mrs. Hargrove’s office. That was where the blue bottles were stored under lock and key. If she could extract a 10ml sample of the liquid and get it to Dr. Thorne’s lab in Boston, they would have undeniable proof of what Noah was being fed.

She reached the office door. It was unlocked.

Claire slipped inside, pulling a small penlight from her pocket. The beam of light danced across the polished desk, the framed photographs of the estate, and finally landed on the small glass-fronted medicine cabinet on the wall.

She reached into her bag, pulled out a small lock-picking tension wrench she had practiced using all afternoon, and set to work on the cabinet lock.

Click.

The glass door swung open. Inside sat six blue glass bottles, completely devoid of pharmaceutical labels, marked only with dates.

Claire pulled a sterile syringe and a small glass vial from her backpack. She unscrewed the top of one bottle, drew 10ml of the thick blue liquid into the syringe, and transferred it into her vial.

"Fascinating, isn't it?"

Claire gasped, spinning around. The overhead lights flicked on, blinding her for a second.

Standing in the doorway was Mrs. Hargrove. She was holding a small, sleek black stun gun in her hand, her face completely cold and devoid of any human emotion.

"Miss Bennett," Mrs. Hargrove said softly, stepping into the room and locking the door behind her. "I must admit, I underestimated your tenacity. I thought a couple hundred dollars and a threat of police action would keep a pathetic, broke former physical therapist away."

Claire backed against the desk, hiding the vial in her pocket. "What are you giving him, Margaret? Is it a muscle relaxant? Baclofen? Dantrolene? What are you poisoning that little boy with?"

Mrs. Hargrove let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Poisoning? What a dramatic word. We are preserving an asset, Miss Bennett."

"He’s a seven-year-old child!" Claire shouted.

"He is the sole heir to a forty-million-dollar estate!" Mrs. Hargrove retorted, her eyes narrowing into slits. "And his father is a gullible, grief-stricken fool who willingly writes multi-million-dollar checks to Dr. Vance’s research foundation as long as he believes his son is dying! Do you have any idea how much money Dr. Vance and I have cleared over the last six years? Millions. And all it takes is a tiny daily dose of a specialized neuromuscular sedative to keep the boy weak enough to stay in that chair."

"Ethan will kill you when he finds out," Claire breathed.

"Ethan won't find out," Mrs. Hargrove said smoothly, raising the stun gun. "Because tonight, an intruder broke into the house, attacked the administrator, and was apprehended by security. You are going to prison, Miss Bennett."

Mrs. Hargrove lunged forward with the stun gun.

Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy bronze paperweight off the desk and swung it with all her strength. It struck Mrs. Hargrove’s arm, knocking the stun gun to the floor. The weapon went off with a loud blue spark, scorching the rug.

Mrs. Hargrove shrieked, stumbling back.

Claire sprinted for the door, threw it open, and burst into the grand hallway—straight into the arms of Ethan Caldwell, who was standing there in his bathrobe, holding a heavy flashlight.
