Chapter 1 - The Breath of Life

The heavy oak door of the master study stood slightly ajar, letting out a sliver of warm golden light into the darkened corridor. Inside, the quiet was terrifying.
Alejandro Moretti’s world had shrunk to a single point of suffocating darkness. The silence in his chest was deafening; his throat felt like it had been seared shut with molten lead. The poison—disguised as the finest vintage Barolo—was tearing through his system with cruel efficiency. On the floor, the blood-red stain on the expensive Aubusson rug broadened like a phantom, taunting his fleeting consciousness. He was the king of the New York underworld, a man whose name made hardened criminals tremble, yet here he lay, entirely helpless, dying on his own rug like an abandoned stray.
Then came the patter of tiny feet.
Emma dropped to her knees beside the giant man. To her four-year-old mind, he wasn't the fearsome Don of the Moretti crime family. He was just a grown-up who couldn't breathe. And Emma knew that horror all too well.
"Hold still, mister," she whispered, her tiny voice trembling slightly, though her hands remained remarkably steady.
She pulled off the blue safety cap of the EpiPen, just as her mother had taught her. Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh.
With all the strength in her small frame, Emma slammed the needle into Alejandro’s outer thigh. Click.
"One... two... three... four... five..." she counted aloud in her sweet, babyish cadence, pressing down firmly until the device clicked again.
A surge of pure epinephrine violently injected straight into his bloodstream.
Alejandro’s body violently convulsed. His eyes snapped open, wide and bloodshot. A harsh, desperate rasp tore from his throat as his windway suddenly cracked open. Air—glorious, cold, life-giving air—rushed back into his starving lungs. He gasped wildly, his massive chest heaving against the floor as sweat instantly drenched his forehead.
His vision, blurred with tears and pain, slowly began to focus. He expected to see his top enforcer, Bruno, standing over him with a drawn gun. He expected to see a traitor smirking down at his corpse.
Instead, he saw a little girl.
She was wearing a faded yellow sweater, holding a empty plastic auto-injector, her bright, innocent eyes staring back at him with a mix of awe and worry. Clutched under her left arm was a floppy-eared stuffed bunny.
"Are you okay now?" Emma asked innocently, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "My mommy says after the pen, you gotta see a doctor."
Alejandro tried to speak, but his voice was a broken rasp. "Who... who are you?"
"I'm Emma," she said proudly. "That was my last EpiPen. Mommy said it was my special magic stick, but... you needed it more."
Alejandro’s heart slammed against his ribs—not from the epinephrine, but from a profound, earth-shattering shock. He looked at the empty auto-injector, then at the child. He knew who she was now. She was the daughter of Clara, the quiet, hardworking maid he had hired six months ago.
Before Alejandro could pull himself up, the study door swung wide open. Bruno, his chief of security, rushed in, weapon drawn, followed by two armed guards and Clara, who was pale with fright.
"Don Alejandro!" Bruno gasped, taking in the scene—the shattered glass, the wine stain, the Don on the floor, and the maid's child standing right beside him.
"Emma!" Clara shrieked, dropping her cleaning supplies and sprinting across the room. She threw her arms around her daughter, pulling her back in terror. "Oh God! I'm so sorry, Don Moretti! She wandered off! Please don't hurt her! Please!"
"Clara..." Alejandro rasped, slowly pushing himself up into a sitting position against the mahogany desk. He raised a hand to stop Bruno, who had instinctively lowered his gun but kept his eyes fixed on the scene. "Stop. She... she saved my life."
Clara froze, looking down at her daughter, then at the spent EpiPen rolling across the floor. "What?"
"Poison," Alejandro growled, his deep voice returning, laced with deadly edge. He glared at the shattered wineglass. "Someone put an allergen... a heavy toxin in my glass. My throat closed. I was dead, Bruno. She saved me."

Bruno’s face went white. "Poison? Sir, the perimeter is secure, nobody entered—"
"Someone in this house tried to kill me," Alejandro cut him off, his dark eyes flashing with lethal fury. He looked down at Emma, his expression instantly softening into something remarkably gentle. He reached out a large, scarred hand, resting it softly on top of Emma's head. "And this little girl just declared war on my enemies."
