Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Ledger

By noon the following day, the storm that had gripped Port Lawson began to clear.
The private VIP wing of St. Jude’s Hospital had been completely transformed. The hospital staff had been thoroughly vetted by State Police and Dante’s trusted lieutenants. Mason Reed and seven of his co-conspirators were in federal custody, held without bail on charges ranging from attempted murder to high treason under RICO statutes.
In Room Seven, the blinds were drawn back, allowing the bright afternoon sunlight to stream across the polished floors.
Adrian Vale sat propped up against a mountain of white pillows. He was still pale, his dark hair messy, and a thick bandage was wrapped beneath his hospital gown. But his dark eyes were sharp, intense, and full of an undeniable, terrifying life.
Beside his bed sat Grace, wearing a clean, soft cream sweater and jeans—no longer the housekeeper’s uniform. On the edge of the bed itself sat Lily, meticulously applying a series of colorful animal stickers directly onto the plastic armrest of Adrian’s heart monitor.
"Not the screen, turtle," Adrian said softly, his voice raspy and deep from the breathing tube he had used hours earlier. "I need to see the numbers."
"It's a giraffe," Lily corrected with absolute authority, pressing the sticker down firmly with her thumb. "Giraffes make you heal faster."
A rare, genuine smile touched Adrian’s lips. He reached out with his large, calloused hand, gently wrapping his fingers around Lily’s tiny wrist. "If you say so, kiddo. Giraffe it is."
He looked up at Grace, his expression softening into something deep and vulnerable. "Dante told me what happened at the house, Grace. You shot Mason."
Grace blushed slightly, looking down at her hands in her lap. "He was going to hurt us, Adrian. He was going to kill you, and he was going to take everything you built."
Adrian leaned forward slightly, wincing as his surgical wound pulled, but his gaze never left hers. "I don't care about what I built, Grace. The empire... the warehouses, the money... it’s all just stone and steel. But you brought that gun out to protect my life and your child’s life. You went into my safe."
Grace felt a sudden knot of anxiety in her throat. She reached into her handbag and pulled out the black leather binder and the flash drives she had taken from the vault. She set them on the bedside table.
"I didn't look through all of it," Grace confessed softly. "Just enough to find the offshore manifests Dante needed to prove Mason’s transactions with the Valenti family. I’m sorry if I breached your privacy, Adrian."
Adrian looked at the binder, then back at Grace. He shook his head slowly.
"Do you know why I put that safe in my bedroom, Grace?" he asked quietly.
Grace shook her head.
"Three years ago, when you walked into my office for that interview, you were terrified," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a tender register that no mob captain had ever heard. "You had worn-out shoes, a infant in a second-hand carrier, and eyes full of a fierce, desperate love for your daughter. I saw a woman who would tear the world down to give her child a safe place to sleep."
He reached out across the sheets, placing his hand over Grace’s shaking fingers.
"I built that vault three years ago," Adrian continued softly. "And inside those ledgers... page forty-two contains the legal trust documents for the Vale estate. I signed them six months ago. If anything had happened to me in that harbor ambush, ninety percent of my legitimate assets, the estate, and the shipping company were legally transferred to you and Lily."
Grace gasped, her eyes widening in total shock. "What? Adrian... no! I’m just your housekeeper!"
"You were never just my housekeeper, Grace," Adrian said, his eyes burning with an undeniable, fierce intensity. "You were the only honest thing in my life. You and Lily gave me a reason to look forward to coming home every night. You brought light into a house that had been a tomb for twenty years."
Grace stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat. She looked down at his large, strong hand holding hers, feeling the warmth of his skin, the absolute sincerity behind his words.
"Uncle Adrian?" Lily spoke up, looking between the two of us with her big, curious eyes.
Adrian looked down at her. "Yes, Lily-bug?"
Lily leaned in close to his ear, whispering with great secret importance. "Mama cries in the kitchen sometimes because she likes you."
Grace’s face turned bright red. "Lily!"
Adrian let out a deep, booming laugh that caused him to clutch his bandaged side, but his eyes were shining with a brilliant, joyful light. "Is that true, Grace?"
Grace looked at the man who had protected her, who had trusted her with his life, his empire, and his heart. She didn't look away. She smiled through a sudden rush of happy tears.

"Yes," Grace whispered softly. "It’s true."
Adrian pulled her hand up to his lips, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "Then as soon as these doctors let me out of this bed, Mrs. Miller... things are going to change around here."
