Chapter 4 - The Senator’s Pride

The grand drawing room of the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, flickering light of a massive stone fireplace, but the air inside was freezing cold.

Senator Julian Vale stood near the center of the room, flanked by two imposing men in dark trench coats. He was a silver-haired politician in his late fifties, possessing the kind of polished, arrogant confidence that only decades of unchecked power and wealth could buy.

Cassandra sat on a sofa near him, her mascara slightly smudged, holding a delicate handkerchief, acting the part of a terrified victim. Mrs. Hargrove stood near the grand piano, her hands folded neatly in front of her black dress, though her eyes darted nervously toward the floor.

The double doors opened, and Vincent walked in, followed by Valeri, myself, and Lily, whom I held tightly in my arms.

"Vincent!" Senator Vale roared, taking two aggressive steps forward. "What is the meaning of this illegal detainment?! My daughter calls me crying, telling me you've locked her in this house and set your thugs to guard her!"

Vincent didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the marble bar, poured two fingers of bourbon into a crystal glass, and turned around to face the Senator.

"Julian," Vincent said smoothly. "You came all the way from Albany in a rainstorm. You must be worried about your daughter."

"I am worried about your sanity!" Vale spat, pointing a manicured finger at Vincent. "You’re accusing Cassandra of trying to poison a infant based on the ramblings of a concussed maid and a child who barely knows her letters! It’s disgraceful!"

"A child who saved my son's life," Vincent corrected sharply, setting his glass down with a heavy, echoing clink against the marble counter. "And the maid you speak of happens to have a name. It’s Elena."

Cassandra scoffed loudly. "Oh, please, Vincent! Look at her! She’s an uneducated servant! She probably dropped the bottle herself, panicked when she saw the baby choking, and made up this entire elaborate conspiracy to avoid going to prison!"

"Is that so?" I stepped forward, holding Lily close to my chest, staring directly into Cassandra’s furious blue eyes. "Then explain why your orange blossom perfume was on my uniform when I woke up. Explain why the master security panel registered your private access code at 7:15 AM—the exact minute I was hit from behind."

Cassandra’s face went stiff. "Codes can be stolen!"

"And what about the six hundred thousand dollars?" Valeri added, holding up his tablet. "The money transferred from your family's offshore account to Mrs. Hargrove’s mortgage lender three weeks ago?"

Mrs. Hargrove gasped, her knees giving out slightly as she clutched the edge of the grand piano for support.

Senator Vale’s eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. He realized instantly that the situation was slipping out of his control, but he was too old a political fox to surrender without a fight.

"This is all circumstantial nonsense!" Senator Vale sneered, stepping closer to Vincent. "You have no physical proof that links my daughter to any poison! If you try to bring these ridiculous claims to the police or the syndicate commission, I will destroy you, Vincent! I will pull your port permits, freeze your corporate assets, and have Child Protective Services remove that baby from your custody before nightfall!"

The threat hung in the air like a heavy executioner’s axe.

A Senator’s power wasn't just money; it was the entire weight of the state apparatus.

Cassandra smirked, regaining her composure, taking her father's arm. "You need us, Vincent. You can't run the Moretti shipping empire without my father's blessing. Forget this foolish maid, fire the staff, and let's get back to planning our wedding."

Vincent looked at Cassandra. Then he looked at Senator Vale.

Suddenly, Vincent laughed—a short, dark, melodic sound that chilled the blood of everyone in the room.

"You really think my father built this empire by relying on port permits, Julian?" Vincent asked, stepping around the marble bar.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, tossing it onto the coffee table in front of the Senator.

"What is that?" Vale demanded, frowning.

"That," Vincent said softly, "is the complete digital ledger of your private offshore accounts in Zürich, along with the audio recordings of your private meetings with the heads of the Russian mob in Brooklyn last month."

Senator Vale’s entire body went rigid. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like he was having a stroke.

May you like

"How... how did you get that?" Vale whispered, his voice trembling.

"You thought you were setting a trap for my son, Julian," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "In reality, I have been building a cage around you for two years. I only needed a reason to shut the door."
