Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

At 2:00 AM, the estate was bathed in darkness, save for the emergency low-voltage floor lights along the corridors.
Sophia woke up to the sound of her bedroom door clicking open.
She sat up instantly in her small twin bed, pulling the blanket to her chest. "Who's there?!"
A tall figure stepped out of the shadows.
It was Lorenzo. He was wearing his black tactical coat, gloves, and a shoulder holster holding two extra magazines.
"Mr. Moretti!" Sophia gasped, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What's happening?"
"Get up, Miss Carter," Lorenzo said softly, stepping closer to Emma’s little bed in the corner of the room. "Pack a single bag for you and your daughter. You are leaving the estate in ten minutes."
Sophia scrambled out of bed, her face pale with terror. "Are we in danger? Did I do something?"
Lorenzo looked down at Emma, who was fast asleep, clutching a plush rabbit to her chest. His dark face softened for a single, fleeting second.
"You are not in danger from me, Sophia," Lorenzo said quietly. "My private helicopter is waiting at the south helipad. My pilot will fly you and Emma to a secure compound in northern Wisconsin. You will have four armed guards with you who report directly to me."
Sophia stared at him, tears welling in her eyes. "Why are you doing this for us?"
"Because your daughter gave me something I thought I had lost forever," Lorenzo said, reaching down to gently pat Emma’s head through her blanket. "She gave me back my eyes. And because her father was a coward, but she deserves to live in a world where she is safe."
He reached into his coat and pulled out a thick Manila envelope, setting it on the nightstand beside Sophia.
"In that envelope is a trust fund deed registered in Emma’s name," Lorenzo explained. "It contains five million dollars. It will pay for her education, her home, and her future, no matter what happens to me tonight."
Sophia’s mouth opened in utter shock. "Five million... Mr. Moretti, I can't accept this—"
"Accept it," Lorenzo commanded, his voice firm and absolute. "And never return to Chicago. Live a good life, Sophia. Raise her well."
He turned and walked toward the door.
"Mr. Moretti!" Sophia called out softly.
Lorenzo stopped, his hand resting on the doorframe.
"Be careful," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
Lorenzo didn't answer. He simply gave her a single, resolute nod and stepped out into the hallway, closing the door softly behind him.
Out in the east wing corridor, Marco Vance was waiting.
He was standing near the grand staircase, wearing his tactical security jacket, holding an assault rifle. Four senior security guards—men who belonged to Marco’s private inner circle—stood behind him in full tactical gear.
"Where are you going at two in the morning, Boss?" Marco asked, his voice echoing slightly in the empty hallway.
Lorenzo walked toward them slowly, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets.
"I just sent the maid and her daughter to the helipad," Lorenzo said, stopping ten feet away from Marco.
Marco’s eyes flicked toward the staff wing, a dark line forming between his brows. "You're sending them away? Without consulting me on security protocol?"
"I don't need your permission to protect my family, Marco," Lorenzo said softly.
Marco chuckled—a dry, bitter sound. "Family? She's just a maid, Lorenzo. And the kid is a bastard child of a dead street thug. They aren't your family."
"Her father isn't dead, Marco," Lorenzo said calmly. "Marcus is living in Miami. On Alvarez's payroll."
The air in the hallway turned to stone.
The four guards behind Marco instantly reached for their weapons, but Marco held up a hand to stop them. His face slowly transformed, shedding the loyal, protective mask he had worn for twenty years, revealing the cold, calculating mercenary beneath.
"So," Marco said, his voice dropping into a raspy growl. "The accountant found the money trail."
"October 12," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Two hundred thousand dollars a month. Five hundred thousand for the hit on Lake Shore Drive."
Marco didn't deny it. He didn't cry out in remorse. He simply shifted his weight, his fingers resting near the trigger of his rifle.
"Isabella was a casualty of business, Lorenzo," Marco spat softly. "You were weak. You were going to pull the Moretti family out of the narcotics trade because she wanted a peaceful life for your kid. Alvarez offered me a future. He offered me real wealth, not just crumbs from your table."
"And the last three years?" Lorenzo asked, taking a step closer.
"Alvarez paid me to keep you in the dark," Marco sneered. "And it worked! You sat in that library like a broken old dog for three years! You were useless! Until that damn little girl walked into your office with that pink brush."

"She reminded me of who I used to be," Lorenzo said quietly.
"She ruined everything!" Marco shouted, his face twisting with rage as he raised his rifle. "Kill him!"
