Chapter 4 - The Confession on the Wire

The private library on the third floor of the Vale estate was designed to resemble an old-world English gentleman’s club, with towering cherrywood bookshelves, velvet armchairs, and a reinforced steel panic room hidden behind a sliding wall panel.

Marcus Reed was tied securely to a heavy mahogany armchair with industrial zip-ties biting deep into his wrists and ankles. A strip of gray duct tape was peeled away from his mouth as Adrian tossed a heavy leather briefcase onto the glass coffee table in front of him.

Marcus gasped for air, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy steel door where two of Thomas’s elite operators stood guard with assault rifles resting across their chests.

“Adrian... come on,” Marcus choked out, trying to force a pathetic, wheezing smile. “We’re brothers. We’ve been through hell together. You can’t seriously—you’re not going to kill me over a misunderstanding, are you?”

“A misunderstanding?” Adrian walked over to the wet bar in the corner of the library, poured a glass of ice water, and walked back, tossing the cold liquid directly into Marcus’s face.

Marcus sputtered, coughing violently as the ice water shocked his nervous system.

“You tried to murder my wife,” Adrian said, pulling up a leather armchair and sitting down directly across from Marcus, resting his elbows on his knees. “You orphaned my daughter for eight months. You betrayed every man who ever bled for this family. And you call it a misunderstanding?”

“The board... the board will never let you get away with this!” Marcus snarled, his mask of fake brotherhood finally cracking into raw, furious desperation. “If I don't check in with the syndicate council by 8:00 PM, an automated switch sends our entire internal ledger—including every money-laundering front, every political bribe, and every federal informant file we own—straight to the FBI field office in Chicago! You kill me, and your entire empire goes down in flames with me!”

Adrian didn't react. He didn't blink. He simply reached into his breast pocket, pulled out his smartphone, unlocked the screen with a flick of his thumb, and tossed the phone onto the coffee table right in front of Marcus.

On the screen was an active, high-definition video call.

Displayed in the grid were twelve men—the senior capos, regional directors, and executive board members of the Vale syndicate. They weren't sitting in a dark warehouse; they were sitting in the main conference room downstairs, having been quietly summoned by Thomas’s tactical teams an hour ago under emergency protocols.

And right at the head of that virtual conference table sat Judge Arthur Sterling, the most influential federal magistrate in Northern Illinois, whose silence Marcus had supposedly bought three years ago.

Marcus stared at the phone screen, his color draining entirely away until his skin looked like old parchment.

“H-How... how did you—?” Marcus stammered, his voice turning into a high-pitched squeak.

“Did you really think I spent eight months mourning in isolation, Marcus?” Adrian asked, his voice dripping with icy contempt. “Did you think that because I trusted you, I stopped verifying my own ledgers? I discovered the financial discrepancies in the overseas shipping accounts six months before the crash. I knew someone inside the inner circle was skimming funds and building a shadow alliance.”

Adrian leaned forward, his eyes burning into Marcus’s terrified soul.

“I didn't know who the traitor was yet,” Adrian continued quietly. “So I set a trap. I let you think you were winning. I let you execute your little ambush on the service road, knowing that if my family was targeted, the real snake would eventually expose its fangs to claim the crown. I just didn't expect you to be so arrogant as to try and murder my daughter twice.”

Through the speaker on the phone, Judge Sterling’s deep, resonant voice echoed clearly into the library:

“We hear you loud and clear, Mr. Vale. The council has reviewed the encrypted audio files recovered from the security hub downstairs—including Mr. Reed’s full confession regarding the assassination of Evelyn Hart and the conspiracy to seize corporate control.”

Marcus let out a strangled, hopeless sob, his head dropping forward against his chest. “No... no, please... Adrian, give me another chance. I can make you billions—!”

“Mr. Reed,” Judge Sterling interrupted coldly from the phone speaker. “By unanimous vote of the executive board and the judicial oversight committee, you are hereby stripped of all rank, assets, and protection within the organization. You are formally declared an enemy of the house of Vale. May God have mercy on your soul, because Mr. Vale certainly will not.”

The video call abruptly disconnected with a soft digital tone.

The room fell dead silent, save for the rhythmic tick-tock of an antique grandfather clock in the corner.

Thomas Kane stepped forward, sliding a heavy, suppressed pistol out of his tactical holster and offering the grip handle silently to Adrian.

Adrian looked down at the gun.

For eight months, he had dreamed of this exact moment. He had imagined blowing Marcus’s brains across this very wall, letting justice be served in the dark where the law couldn't reach.

May you like

He reached out his hand and wrapped his fingers around the cold steel grip of the pistol.

Marcus squeezed his eyes shut, tears streaming down his cheeks, waiting for the final, merciful crack of thunder.
