Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the lush, green rolling hills of Hawthorne Ridge. Wildflowers bloomed along the stone perimeter walls, and the cold, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the estate for a decade was completely gone.
The iron security gates were still there, and the security detail still monitored the grounds, but the house itself was full of life, laughter, and light.
On the grand stone porch overlooking the courtyard, a wide wooden swing hung from the thick beams.
Sofia sat on the porch swing, wearing a light yellow summer dress, sipping a glass of iced lemonade, watching the scene on the front lawn. She looked radiant, healthy, and entirely at peace.
Down on the grass, Emma—now four years old—was running through the spray of a garden sprinkler, her wild laughter ringing like silver bells across the estate.
Chasing right beside her, leaping over the water jets with surprising agility for his age, was Bruno. The old dog's limp was entirely gone, his coat was glossy and deep black, and his tail wagged continuously as he nudged Emma gently back toward the dry grass whenever she got too close to the flower beds.
And standing near the rose garden, wearing a simple white linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up, was Adrian.
He wasn't holding a tumbler of whiskey. He wasn't reviewing security reports.
He was holding a bright red plastic bubble wand, blowing dozens of shimmering bubbles into the warm summer breeze for Emma and Bruno to chase.
"Catch them, Bruno! Catch them!" Emma squealed, jumping into the air as Bruno let out a soft, joyful bark, snapping at a cloud of bubbles drifting past his nose.
Adrian laughed—a real, rich, genuine sound that resonated across the warm courtyard.
He walked over to the porch, stepping up the stone stairs, and sat down beside Sofia on the swing. He reached out, wrapping his long arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. Sofia leaned her head comfortably against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.
"You're blowing bubbles for a dog, Adrian Mercer," Sofia teased gently, looking up at him with a loving smile. "What would the Chicago crime families say if they saw you now?"
"The Chicago crime families don't exist anymore, sweetie," Adrian replied smoothly, kissing the top of her head. "And if anyone has a problem with my bubble technique... they can take it up with my head of security."
He gestured toward Bruno, who was currently lying upside down on the grass, letting Emma rub his belly with a dandelion.
"He looks very intimidating," Sofia giggled.
"He's a menace," Adrian agreed, a soft smirk playing on his lips.
Adrian looked out over the sunny lawn—at the little girl who had walked into his cold, frozen courtyard on a bitter January morning with nothing but a white washcloth and a brave heart.
She had saved the dog everyone was afraid of.
And in doing so, she had saved the man who owned him.
"Thank you, Adrian," Sofia whispered softly, turning to press a gentle kiss against his jawline. "For giving us a home."

Adrian tightened his grip around her, looking at his family with a sense of absolute, unshakeable peace.
"Thank you, Sofia," Adrian murmured softly into the warm summer breeze. "For bringing the light back into mine."
