Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper’s Secret

By evening, the storm outside had settled into a soft, quiet snowfall over the city.

Federal agents from the Department of Justice had swept through Evan Cross's private residence and the offices of Aegis Logistics. The paper trail uncovered inside Evan’s private servers exposed a decade of embezzlement, kickbacks, and corporate sabotage, fully exonerating Gabriel Rowan from any lingering illegal activities of the old syndicate.

At eight o'clock, Gabriel's heavy SUV pulled back into the long driveway of his mansion.

The grand house was warm, lit by the golden glow of chandeliers reflecting off the pristine snow.

Gabriel walked through the front doors, taking off his wet overcoat and handing it to the butler. His body felt exhausted, but his mind felt lighter than it had in fourteen years.

He walked down the service corridor toward the kitchen.

Inside, Hannah Bennett was ironing linens near the warm hearth, her face tired but gentle. On the small wooden bench nearby, young Lucy sat swinging her legs, drawing a picture of a large snow-covered oak tree with her colored pencils.

When the kitchen door opened, Hannah immediately stood up, wiping her hands on her apron.

"Mr. Rowan," Hannah said nervously, offering a quick nod. "I’m so sorry Lucy was in the main house earlier. I know she isn't supposed to wander into your wing—"

"Hannah," Gabriel interrupted gently, holding up a hand. "Please, sit down."

Hannah hesitated, looking confused, but sat back on the wooden stool.

Gabriel walked over to the low bench and sat down beside eight-year-old Lucy.

He looked at her drawing for a moment. "That's a very good tree, Lucy."

Lucy looked up, her brown eyes wide and curious. "Did you find the squeaky man?"

"We found him," Gabriel said softly. "And he won't be coming back to this house ever again."

Lucy nodded with great seriousness, taking another sip of hot cocoa from her mug. "Good. His shoe was annoying."

Gabriel turned to Hannah, his expression serious. "Hannah, how long have you worked for my estate?"

"Four years, Mr. Rowan," she replied softly. "Ever since my husband passed away."

"You've been loyal, quiet, and honest," Gabriel said. "And today, your daughter saved my life and the lives of many people who depend on this company."

Hannah blinked back sudden tears, reaching out to hold Lucy's hand. "She's a good girl, Mr. Rowan. She notices things most people miss."

Gabriel reached inside his suit pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, alongside a set of official legal documents signed by his primary estate attorney an hour ago.

He laid them gently on the wooden table.

"What is this?" Hannah asked, her voice trembling.

"This is the deed to a four-bedroom house near Lincoln Park," Gabriel explained quietly. "Fully furnished, fully paid for. And this document establishes an educational trust fund in Lucy's name that will cover her tuition from private preparatory school all the way through any university she chooses."

Hannah gasped, covering her mouth with both hands as tears spilled down her cheeks. "Mr. Rowan... no, we can't possibly accept that! I'm just a housekeeper—"

"You are not just a housekeeper, Hannah," Gabriel corrected her firmly, his eyes shining with sincerity. "You are family now. In my world, true loyalty is rare. When it is found, it is protected above all else."

Lucy looked from the legal papers to Gabriel, her small face serious. "Does the new house have a big yard for a dog?"

May you like

Gabriel smiled—a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years.

"It has the biggest yard on the block, Lucy," Gabriel whispered. "And you can have whatever dog you want."
