Chapter 3 - The Shadow Council

By five o'clock in the morning, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a thick, suffocating fog that blanketed the estate’s three hundred acres of private woodland.

Inside the subterranean command center beneath the Marlowe estate—a room constructed of reinforced steel and concrete that not even Victor knew existed—Adrian stood before a wall of glowing security monitors.

Sophia sat at the central console, her fingers moving rapidly across the keyboard. Though she was a woman of elegance and arts, her father had been a high-ranking naval communications officer; she knew how to read encrypted data streams better than most corporate technicians.

“Look at this, Adrian,” Sophia said, pointing to a red line of code flashing on the main screen.

Adrian leaned over her shoulder, his arm resting against the back of her chair. “What is it?”

“Victor didn't just copy the ledger keys,” she explained, her voice sharp with concentration. “He’s been draining the offshore logistics accounts in tiny increments for twenty-four months. Over forty million dollars. He’s been funding Julian Vance’s mercenary groups in Eastern Europe.”

“He wasn't preparing to kill me,” Adrian realized, his eyes narrowing as he read the transaction logs. “He was preparing to replace me. Vance wasn't his boss. Vance was his partner.”

Suddenly, the secondary monitor blinked to life. A single video feed from the north gate perimeter showed a black armored SUV idling in the fog just beyond the tree line.

Through the thermal imaging camera, three armed figures could be seen sitting inside.

“They’re early,” Adrian said coldly.

“Victor told them you would be distracted by the scandal with me,” Sophia said, looking up at him with a mixture of guilt and fiery resolve. “He thought you would lock yourself in your office, confront me, and let your guard down.”

“He forgot who trained me,” Adrian said smoothly.

He walked over to a weapons rack mounted on the reinforced wall, pulling out two dark matte-black sidearms and checking their magazines with practiced, effortless efficiency. He holstered one at his hip and offered the second to Sophia.

She looked at the weapon, then up at him. She didn't hesitate. She took the gun, checking the safety lock just as her father had taught her years ago.

“I’m not letting them take our future, Adrian,” she said, her voice steady and resolute. “I stood by you when you were just a man trying to change his life. I’m standing by you now.”

Adrian reached out, pulling her into his arms. He buried his face in the soft curve of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of jasmine and rain that always clung to her.

“Four years ago,” Adrian murmured against her skin, “I thought my life was meant to be lived in the dark. You brought the light back into this house, Sophia. I will tear this city to ashes before I let anyone take you from me.”

He pulled back, looking into her eyes. “Stay here with Clara and Emma. The command center door is sealed from the inside. Once I step out, no one enters until you hear my voice.”

“Adrian, wait—” she began, her hand gripping his sleeve.

“Victor thinks he’s coming to a funeral today,” Adrian smiled—a sharp, terrifying expression that held no warmth whatsoever. “I wouldn't want to disappoint him.”
