Chapter 6 - A New Dawn
Six months later, the Hudson Valley estate was alive with the bright, vibrant colors of early summer. The ancient oak trees were thick with green leaves, and the air smelled of blooming roses and the crisp, clean water of the river below.
A massive white marquee tent had been set up on the great lawn, overlooking the valley. But this wasn't a corporate charity gala or a meeting of crime bosses. It was a private celebration.
Dominic stood on the stone terrace, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, a glass of vintage champagne in his hand. He looked down at the lawn, where Marcus and Daniel were currently taking turns pushing Harper on a brand-new wooden swing set built beneath the shade of a massive willow tree. Her laughter drifted up the hill, bright and clear, entirely free of the terror that had once gripped her in the gray dawn.
The glass doors behind him opened, and Mia stepped out onto the terrace. She wore a stunning, understated cream-colored dress that caught the afternoon sun. Around her neck rested the silver bird pendant, but the cheap steel chain had been replaced with a delicate, unbreakable strand of platinum.
"The lawyers just called from the city," Mia said, walking over to stand beside him at the stone railing. Her skin was glowing, the shadows of the cellar completely erased by months of peace. "The final restructuring documents have been filed. The shipping terminals are officially under a public utility trust. The old organization is completely dismantled, Dominic. You're out. Legally, permanently out."
Dominic took a slow sip of his champagne, looking out over the peaceful valley. The empire he had spent thirty years building—the one that had cost him his first wife, his brother's loyalty, and his own soul—was gone. In its place was something much smaller, yet infinitely more powerful.
"How does it feel?" Mia asked softly, stepping closer until her shoulder brushed against his.
Dominic turned to look down at her, a slow, relaxed smile spreading across his face. He reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear, his thumb brushing against her cheek.
"It feels quiet," Dominic whispered, his eyes filled with a peace he hadn't known since he was a boy. "For the first time in my life, I can't hear any knocking in the dark."
Down on the lawn, Harper suddenly noticed them standing on the terrace. She let go of the swing, waving both arms frantically in the air, her face bright with absolute certainty.

"Mommy! Dominic! Look at me!" she shouted, her voice echoing across the green valley.
Dominic waved back, his hand wrapping firmly around Mia’s waist, pulling her close against his side as the warm summer sun broke through the trees, lighting up the path ahead of them with a brilliant, golden promise of a future they had both fought to deserve.
