Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

Two days later.
The annual Caruso Foundation Gala was being held at the grand waterfront estate in Rye, New York. It was the premier social event of the year for the city's elite—a glittering gathering of politicians, judges, wealthy businessmen, and high-ranking syndicate bosses operating under the guise of high society.
The ballroom was magnificent, filled with crystal chandeliers, white silk drapes, and a twenty-piece orchestra playing classical waltzes.
Daniel Mercer stood near the champagne fountain, dressed in a flawless tuxedo, holding court with three prominent city councilmen. He looked triumphant, radiating confidence. For three years, he had been quietly siphoning funds from the Caruso logistics network into private Swiss accounts. Tonight, he planned to announce a massive new port expansion project that would effectively give him direct control over seventy percent of the empire's revenue.
Vincent walked into the ballroom, flanked by Marco.
Vincent looked imposing, commanding, and impeccably sharp in his dark tuxedo. But those who knew him well noticed a distinct change in his eyes. The hollow, dead look that had defined him for three years was gone. In its place was a sharp, terrifying focus.
Behind Vincent, walking nervously in a modest dark blue cocktail dress, was Claire. Vincent had explicitly insisted that she attend as his guest, along with Margaret and Lily, who were resting safely in the estate's private upper suite under the watch of four heavily armed guards.
When Daniel saw Claire walking behind Vincent, his jaw tightened in anger. He quickly excused himself from the councilmen and marched over to Vincent.
"Vince, what is this?" Daniel hissed under his breath, glaring at Claire. "You brought the housekeeper to the Foundation Gala? Are you trying to embarrass us in front of the council?"
Vincent took a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray, his tone remarkably calm. "Claire is my guest, Daniel. She is part of this household."
Daniel leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a vicious whisper. "You're losing your mind, Vince! First you let her brat run around your house, now you're parading her in front of the board! People are talking. They say you've gone soft because of a pretty maid."
Claire held her head high, refusing to look down, though her heart pounded against her ribs. She remembered what Vincent had told her before they left the estate: No matter what happens tonight, stand beside me. You and Lily are safe.
"Let them talk," Vincent said smoothly, taking a sip of his water. "Speaking of board decisions, Daniel... I reviewed the financial audits for the Pier 42 expansion project this afternoon."
Daniel's eyes flickered with a sudden, cautious tension. "And? It's a goldmine. We're clearing forty million in offshore dividends."
"It is a goldmine," Vincent agreed, turning his head to look directly into Daniel's eyes. "Except I noticed a four-million-dollar discrepancy routed through a shell company called Aegis Holdings in the Cayman Islands."
Daniel's face went rigid. The color drained slightly from his cheeks, though he quickly forced a confident chuckle. "Aegis Holdings is a standard tax shelter, Vince. I set it up two years ago. I explained it to your legal team."
"Did you?" Vincent asked softly. "Because when I called the managing director of Aegis Holdings an hour ago, he told me the sole benefactor of the account isn't the Caruso Foundation. It's registered under your mother's maiden name."
The ambient noise of the ballroom seemed to fade away.
Daniel took a step back, his hand instinctively twitching toward his jacket pocket before he remembered where he was. "Vince... you're misinterpreting the paperwork. I can explain—"
"You don't need to explain anything, Daniel," Vincent said, his voice carrying a dark, smooth rhythm that sent chills down Claire's spine. "We are going to have a private meeting in the conservatory right now. Just you, me, and our senior board members."
Vincent turned his gaze toward the grand doors leading to the conservatory. Four heavy-set men in dark suits stepped into the hallway, quietly closing off the exits.
Daniel looked around the ballroom. He saw the senior capos of the Caruso family standing along the perimeter, their hands folded, their eyes fixed on him with cold, knowing expressions.
He realized, with a sudden, sickening jolt in his stomach, that the trap had already sprung.
"Vince..." Daniel whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "We're brothers..."
Vincent leaned close to Daniel's ear, his breath cold against his cheek.
"Grace was four years old, Daniel," Vincent whispered, the words striking Daniel like a steel blade. "She asked for my glass. And you stood there and watched her drink it."
May you like
Daniel's eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
"Move," Vincent commanded, grabbing Daniel firmly by the elbow and guiding him toward the dark conservatory.
