Chapter 6: A New Kingdom

Six months later, the Highland Park estate looked completely different. The iron gates were gone, replaced by a wide, open driveway lined with blooming white hydrangeas. The heavy security guards had been replaced by the sound of laughter and birds chirping in the morning sun.
On the manicured back lawn, seven-year-old Leo Romano stood on his own two feet.
He was wearing small leg braces, his hands gripping a set of parallel training bars, but his face was bright with determination. With a deep breath, he took one step forward. Then another.
"Look, Daddy! No hands!" Leo shouted, his voice strong, clear, and full of the childhood joy that had been stolen from him for so long.
Victor sat on the porch steps, wearing a simple linen shirt, a soft smile completely transforming his rugged, scarred face. The multi-billion-dollar mafia empire was entirely gone, dismantled and liquidated into clean, legitimate real estate trusts and medical foundations. The name Romano no longer struck fear into the hearts of Chicago; it now stood for the city’s largest pediatric rehabilitation initiative.
Norah walked out of the kitchen, carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade. She had recently passed her board exams to have her nursing license fully reinstated, her name completely cleared by the federal investigators who had cracked down on the hospital ring that framed her.
She sat down next to Victor, her green eyes reflecting the bright summer sky.
"He's getting faster," Norah said, watching Leo successfully navigate the length of the grass to catch a red ball.
"It's because of his nurse," Victor said softly, turning to look at her. He reached out, his hand wrapping around hers, his fingers intertwining with absolute certainty. "And because of the woman who saved this family."
Norah smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"I didn't save this family, Victor," she whispered. "We just unlocked the door."
Out on the lawn, Leo turned around, waving his arms triumphantly as he took three unassisted steps toward them. The empire of blood and shadows had burned to ash, but here, in the warm light of a new dawn, the true kingdom had finally been built.
