Chapter 3 - The Shadow Behind the Chair

The basement of the Vale estate was cold, damp, and smelled of old concrete and rust.
Mara was bound to a heavy wooden chair in the center of a windowless room, a single overhead bulb casting harsh shadows across her bruised face. Vince, Dominic’s right-hand man, stood near the door holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a second burner phone and a small ledger bound in black leather.
When the heavy steel door creaked open and Dominic walked in, Mara pulled against her restraints, her eyes wide with frantic desperation.
“Dominic!” she cried out. “Please, you have to listen to me! I was forced! Someone made me do it!”
Dominic didn't answer. He took the black ledger from Vince’s hands and flipped through the pages.
Written inside were precise dates, times, security shift rotations, and structural blueprints of the Vale estate’s shipping warehouses along the Calumet River. But the most alarming detail was on the final page: a series of financial transfers totaling over two hundred thousand dollars, originating from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
“Who bought you, Mara?” Dominic asked, his voice low and devoid of emotion.
Mara swallowed hard, her confidence entirely shattered. “It... it was the North Side network. They approached me two months before your brother died.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal ice. “My brother’s car accident. You gave them his route.”
Mara shuddered, tears finally spilling over her cheeks—real tears of absolute terror. “They said they only wanted to track his movements! They paid me fifty thousand dollars just to leave his calendar open on the kitchen counter! I didn't know they were going to bomb the car! I swear to God, Dominic, I didn't know!”
“And Noah?” Dominic stepped closer, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. “Why were you poisoning my brother’s son?”
“Because...” Mara stammered, her jaw shaking. “Because after the explosion, the North Side leadership realized Noah was the sole heir to the Vale family trust. Under your father’s original will, if Noah dies before his eighteenth birthday without a direct heir, fifty-one percent of the shipping contracts revert to the secondary contract partners—the Hart family.”
Dominic froze.
The air in the cold basement suddenly felt suffocating.
“The Hart family?” Dominic repeated, every muscle in his back locking up. “Evelyn’s father?”
Mara nodded frantically. “Yes! Marcus Hart! He financed the whole thing! He’s the one who bought my debt! He told me that if Noah died slowly from an illness, no one would suspect foul play. And when you married Evelyn, Marcus would control both the Northern and Southern shipping routes!”
Dominic stood up straight, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.
Everything he thought he understood about his arranged marriage was dissolving into a dark, complex web of deceit. Marcus Hart had proposed the alliance six months ago—right after the fatal highway explosion that killed Dominic’s brother. He had offered his daughter, Evelyn, as a peace gesture to unite the territories.
Was Evelyn part of it?
The thought struck Dominic like a physical blow.
He remembered her clinical calm in the nursery. He remembered how she had hidden the testing kit in her room. He remembered how she had gone straight to the laundry wing three weeks ago to test the lavender oil without telling a single soul.
If she was working for her father, why did she save the baby?
“Did Evelyn know?” Dominic demanded, grabbing Mara by the collar of her shirt and shaking her violently. “Answer me! Did Evelyn know what her father was doing?”
“I... I don't know!” Mara cried out. “Marcus told me to stay away from her! He said his daughter was too soft, too unpredictable! He said she lost her medical license because she refused to cover up a mob hit at her hospital two years ago! He hated her for it! He called her a liability!”
Dominic let go of Mara’s shirt, stepping back as the full picture came into focus.
Evelyn hadn't lost her medical license because of a scandal. She had lost it because she had refused to break her oath for her father’s criminal syndicate. Her father had stripped her of her career, destroyed her reputation, and then used her as a pawn in an arranged marriage to take over the Vale empire.
And Evelyn had come into this house entirely alone, surrounded by enemies on all sides, fighting to save a child whose own uncle was too blind to see the real monster standing at the gates.

Dominic turned toward the door.
“Keep her alive,” Dominic told Vince. “And get thirty armed men ready. We’re going to the Hart estate.”
