Chapter 4 - THE SHADOWS RISE

"I may be blind, Gabriel," Aleandro said softly, his lips curving into a terrifying, lethal smile. "But you forgot one fundamental rule about this house."

Gabriel blinked, confused. "What rule?"

"Rule Number One," Aleandro whispered. "Sound carries."

Before Gabriel could pull the trigger, the heavy double doors of the study exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Three massive men in black tactical gear—led by Marcus, the estate’s chief of security who had served Aleandro’s father for thirty years—flooded into the room like striking cobras.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He kicked Gabriel’s right wrist with a brutal, military strike. The 9mm pistol flew out of Gabriel’s hand, crashing into the fire hearth. Before Gabriel could even scream in pain, two security operators slammed him face-first onto the oak floorboards, twisting his arms behind his back until his shoulders popped.

Dr. Vance shrieked, dropping to his knees and throwing his hands over his head. "Don't shoot! Don't shoot! It was Gabriel’s idea! He paid me three million dollars! He threatened my family!"

Marcus stepped over Gabriel’s groaning body, his heavy tactical boot resting squarely on the back of Gabriel’s neck. He drew his weapon, locking it onto Dr. Vance’s forehead.

"Boss," Marcus said, his voice deep and raspy. "We heard everything over the house intercom. The entire security team listened to every word."

Aleandro slowly stood up from behind his desk. He reached out, his long fingers finding the edge of the mahogany wood to steady himself. Though he was still functionally blind, his presence dominated the entire room like a titan standing over insects.

"Marcus," Aleandro said calmly.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Take Dr. Vance down to the docks at Pier 42," Aleandro ordered smoothly. "Put him in a shipping container bound for Rotterdam. Tell our contacts in the Netherlands that he is an illegal medical practitioner who enjoys chemical experimentation. They will know what to do with him."

"No! Please! Mr. Moretti, have mercy!" Vance screamed as two guards dragged him out of the study, his frantic cries fading down the long, carpeted hallway.

Aleandro walked slowly around the desk, stopping right above his cousin. He tilted his head down toward the sound of Gabriel’s ragged breathing.

"And Gabriel," Aleandro said softly.

Gabriel gritted his teeth through the pain of Marcus’s boot on his neck. "Kill me then, Aleandro! Shoot me right here! Do it yourself, you blind bastard!"

"Kill you?" Aleandro let out a low, cold laugh that sent chills through the room. "No, Gabriel. Death is too quick. It leaves no time for counting."

Aleandro leaned down, his face inches from Gabriel’s ear.

"You are going to spend the rest of your life in a private psychiatric facility in northern Maine. A facility owned entirely by my holding company. The windows will be blacked out. The doors will be soundproofed. You will be given daily doses of Harrison Vance’s special compound until your eyes forget what daylight looks like."

Gabriel’s eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated horror. "No... no! Aleandro, please! Shoot me! Shoot me, damn you!"

"You wanted my darkness, Gabriel," Aleandro whispered, his voice dark as the grave. "Now you can live in it."

Marcus yanked Gabriel up by his collar, dragging the screaming, weeping man out of the study. The heavy oak doors swung shut, leaving the room in absolute, sudden silence once again.

Aleandro stood alone in the center of the vast study. His chest rose and fell heavily as the adrenaline began to clear from his veins. The quiet returned—thick, heavy, and profound.

He turned toward the dark corner of the room.

"Elena," he said gently. His voice was no longer that of a ruthless mob boss; it was the voice of a tired, exhausted man. "You can come out now."

The bookshelf swung open.

Elena stepped out into the light, holding Mia tightly against her chest. Her eyes were wide with a mix of shock and awe. She had just witnessed the complete, ruthless destruction of two powerful men, yet as she looked at Aleandro, she saw no monster. She saw a man who had been tortured for five years, fighting his way back to the light.

"They're gone, sir," Elena whispered softly, her voice trembling.

Aleandro stood still. He slowly held out his right hand into the open air—not with authority, but with a quiet, hesitant vulnerability.

"Elena..." he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "Where is the child?"

Mia looked at her mother. Elena gave her a soft, encouraging nod, gently setting her down on the carpet.

Mia did not hesitate. She ran across the polished floorboards, her small shoes clicking softly against the wood, and wrapped her arms tightly around Aleandro’s right leg.

Aleandro froze. Slowly, carefully, as if handling something made of fragile glass, the feared mafia king sank to his knees on the rug. His large, scarred hands came up, gently touching Mia’s small shoulders, then her soft hair, then her tiny cheeks.

"Thank you, little one," Aleandro whispered, tears finally escaping his pale hazel eyes and tracking down his scarred face. "Thank you for looking at me."

May you like

Mia smiled, holding up her yellow plastic flashlight and pressing it gently into his large palm.

"Don't worry, Uncle Aleandro," Mia said innocently, reaching out her small thumb to wipe a tear from his cheek. "The scary men are gone now. We're gonna fix your eyes."
