Chapter 6 - The Anchor and the Shore

Six months later.

Late August had arrived in Baltimore, bringing crisp, sunny air, brilliant blue skies, and gentle breezes that rustled the green trees along the historic Fells Point waterfront.

The Bellandi empire was no more.

Don Dominic Bellandi and Marcus Bellandi were currently sitting in a federal high-security facility in Virginia, facing multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole after Desmond turned over twenty years of encrypted ledgers, recorded wiretaps, and the weapons freighter to the United States Department of Justice.

Vanessa Bellandi had fled the country, her assets frozen, her high-society status reduced to an international fugitive warrant.

Hale Maritime had been completely cleansed. With the Bellandi influence excised like a poison, the company had expanded legally, signing massive clean-energy transport contracts across the North Atlantic.

On a quiet Friday afternoon, the sun beat down warmly on the private deck of a newly renovated historic townhouse in Fells Point.

Desmond Hale stood by the white wooden railing, looking out over the peaceful harbor. He was wearing a simple linen shirt, its sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a glass of iced tea in his hand. The coldness that had defined his face for three long years was gone, replaced by a quiet, profound peace.

The glass door behind him slid open softly.

Nora stepped out onto the deck.

She wore a simple, breathtaking yellow summer dress that caught the warm breeze. Her arm had healed into a thin, faint silver line near her shoulder—a small, barely noticeable scar that served as the only remaining trace of that dark night six months ago.

Her hazel eyes were bright, full of life, health, and a happiness she had never known before.

She walked up beside Desmond, leaning her side against his, her head resting comfortably against his arm.

Desmond immediately set his glass down, wrapping his broad arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side, his fingers resting gently on her hip.

“You're supposed to be resting,” Desmond murmured softly, pressing a kiss into her hair. “Dr. Thorne said you’re working too many hours on the new harbor foundation.”

Nora laughed—a rich, musical sound that made Desmond’s heart sing.

“I am the director of the foundation, Mr. Hale,” she teased, turning in his arms to look up into his dark, handsome face. “I set my own hours. Besides, my assistant is very strict with my schedule.”

“Is that so?” Desmond smiled, his dark eyes melting with infinite tenderness as he stared down at her. “I should fire him for letting you overwork.”

“You can't fire him,” Nora whispered, her hands rising to rest against his chest, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of his heart. “He’s indispensable.”

Desmond’s hands moved up to frame her face, his thumbs gently tracing her soft cheekbones.

“Nora,” he said softly, his voice dropping into a quiet, serious tone that made her breath catch.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.

Nora’s breath hitched. Her hand flew to her mouth, tears instantly shining in her hazel eyes.

Desmond didn't drop to one knee on a grand stage. He didn't hire a flash mob or invite photographers. He stood right there on their private sun-drenched deck, holding the woman who had saved his life, his soul, and his future.

He opened the velvet box.

Inside sat a simple, breathtaking platinum ring holding a brilliant, flawless solitaire diamond that caught the golden afternoon light like a star.

“Five years ago, you walked into my office and saved my business,” Desmond said, his voice shaking with an emotion so deep it filled the silent afternoon air. “Six months ago, you bled on a kitchen table and saved my life. I don't want a business contract, Nora. I don't want an alliance. I want you. I want your laughter in this house, your hand in mine, and your name tied to mine for as long as I live.”

He looked into her eyes, his hands trembling slightly.

“Nora Reed... will you marry me?”

Nora didn't wait for him to finish. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her, her lips meeting his in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed every promise they had ever made in the dark.

“Yes,” she sobbed happily against his lips, tears of pure joy streaming down her cheeks. “Yes, Desmond! Absolutely yes!”

Desmond slipped the platinum ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

He lifted her off her feet, swinging her around in the sunshine as her laughter echoed over the quiet waters of the Baltimore harbor.

Below them, the ships moved peacefully along the blue water, carrying cargo to distant shores. But for Desmond Hale, the long journey through the cold and storm was finally over.

He had found his true anchor. And he was finally home.
