Chapter 4 - The Showdown in Rockport

Harper didn't move. She stepped forward to the edge of the porch, her broad shoulders straight, her face a mask of absolute calm.

"You are trespassing on private property, Mr. Rossi," Harper said, her voice clear and cutting through the ocean breeze. "Leave."

Victor’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek. He took another step toward the stairs. "I’m not leaving without you. The house is a disaster. Finn hasn't eaten in two days. He’s sick, Harper."

"Then take him to a hospital!" Harper snapped back, her eyes flashing with a fierce light. "You are his father! You have billions of dollars, a fleet of doctors, and a house full of servants! Figure it out!"

"He doesn't want doctors!" Victor roared, his composure shattering completely. "He wants you! I want you!"

Julian stepped off the porch, placing his tall frame directly between Victor and the stairs.

"I think the lady asked you to leave, friend," Julian said, his voice quiet, steady, and utterly devoid of fear.

Victor stopped, his eyes turning to ice as he looked Julian up and down. He recognized the type—a simple, honest local craftsman who knew nothing of the dark, violent world Victor commanded.

"Move out of my way before I have my men break your legs," Victor whispered lethal threat.

"Try it," Julian replied simply, shifting his weight into a fighter’s stance.

"STOP IT!"

A tiny, high-pitched scream shattered the confrontation.

From the backseat of the SUV, the rear door opened.

Finn tumbled out onto the gravel driveway, clutching his leather notebook against his small chest. He was crying, his little shoes untied, his jacket half-zippered against the cold coastal wind.

"HARPER!" Finn sobbed, stumbling forward across the gravel.

All the anger vanished from Harper’s face in a fraction of a second. "Finn!"

She practically flew down the porch stairs, ignoring Victor and Julian completely. She dropped to her knees in the dirty gravel, opening her arms wide.

Finn threw his small body against her chest with such force that it knocked her back onto her heels. He wrapped his arms around her neck, buried his face in her shoulder, and sobbed until his entire body shook.

"I found you... I found you..." the boy wept hysterically. "Dad said you were gone forever... but I kept the notebook... I kept the anchor..."

Harper wrapped her heavy, warm arms around the trembling child, rocking him back and forth on the driveway. She closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes as she pressed her lips against his messy hair.

"I’m here, sweetie," Harper whispered, her voice breaking. "I’m right here. Breathe with me. In... Out... In... Out..."

Within less than sixty seconds, the violent, gut-wrenching sobs subsided into quiet, rhythmic hiccups. Finn’s small fingers tightened in her sweater, resting his heavy head against her shoulder.

Victor stood five feet away, watching the scene in absolute, agonizing silence.

He saw how easily she held his child. He saw how Finn’s small body relaxed completely against her soft waist. And then he looked at Harper’s face—not the timid, quiet employee he had insulted in his kitchen, but a glowing, beautiful, fierce woman who held his whole world in her arms.

"Harper..." Victor whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he had never shown to another living soul. "Please."

Harper looked up from Finn’s hair. Her eyes were cold, distant, and completely unyielding.

"You told me no one would ever want me, Victor," she said softly, each word landing like a physical blow against his chest. "Look around you. I have a home. I have a life. And I don't need your permission to exist."
