Chapter 2 - The Forbidden Name

What happened next defied every law of nature, training, and survival that Damon Castellano had built his empire upon.

The Warden didn't lunge.

The massive dog let out a sharp, ragged exhale that sounded almost like a sigh. The terrifying tension in its muscular frame dissolved instantly. Slowly, agonizingly, the Rottweiler lowered its massive head, tucking its tail with a submissiveness Damon had never witnessed in three years of ownership.

And then, the beast sank heavily to one knee at the little girl's feet.

The guards froze, their weapons half-drawn, their jaws slack. Salvo stared at the scene as if he had just watched the laws of gravity reverse themselves.

Down in the courtyard, the little girl broke into a wide, gap-toothed smile. She dropped to her knees without a shred of fear, wrapping her tiny arms around the dog's thick, powerful neck. The Warden leaned into her embrace, letting out a soft, whimpering whine that sounded entirely alien coming from a creature bred for slaughter.

Then, she leaned close to the dog's ear and whispered a single name.

Even from the second-floor balcony, through the rush of blood in his ears, Damon heard the sound of that name carried up on the afternoon breeze.

“Clara.”

The effect on the dog was instantaneous and violent. The Warden shuddered from nose to tail, a deep, wracking tremor that shook the paving stones beneath them.

Up on the balcony, Damon felt the coffee cup slip from his fingers. It shattered against the limestone tiles below, dark liquid splashing across the pristine stone, but he didn't notice.

His heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

Clara.

Damon had never taught the dog that name. The Warden had come to him fully trained, silent, and obedient only to Damon’s commands.

Yet that name belonged to the one ghost that haunted the darkest corners of the Castellano estate—Clara Vance. The brilliant, enigmatic woman who had trained the Warden, managed the estate’s inner workings, and held a quiet, untouchable influence over Damon during a war three years ago, before vanishing without a trace on a rainy Tuesday night.

Damon had spent three years turning the underworld upside down trying to find her. He had deployed every intelligence asset, bribed informants, hacked police databases, and shaken down rival bosses. Clara had vanished into thin air, leaving behind no digital footprint, no bank withdrawals, and no body.

And now, a seven-year-old girl in a faded yellow dress was kneeling in his private courtyard, whispering Clara’s name to the most feared beast in his empire.

“Salvo!” Damon’s voice cut across the courtyard like a razor blade, stripped of all calm, ringing with an urgent command that made every guard snap to attention.

“Boss!” Salvo yelled back, keeping his weapon half-raised. “Do we take the shot? Do we secure the kid?”

“Don't touch her,” Damon ordered, his voice dropping an octave, cold and absolute. “Don't move an inch. Keep your weapons holstered. If any of you so much as breathes wrong, you answer to me.”

Damon turned sharply on his heel, abandoning his coffee and his blueprint world, and sprinted down the grand staircase toward the East Wing.
