Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

By 3:00 AM, Leah was fast asleep, and Damian had led me down to the underground study—a room shielded from electronic surveillance by thick lead-lined walls and reinforced steel doors.

On the center desk lay a thick black binder stamped with the crimson seal of the Caruso internal security division.

"Viktor isn't talking to the feds," Damian said, pouring two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler and sliding it toward me across the mahogany desk. I shook my head, so he pushed it aside and sat down in his leather swivel chair. "He thinks he holds all the cards. He thinks because he has political protection in Zurich, extradition will take six months."

"Can you reach him?" I asked.

"I don't need to reach him through the legal system," Damian said coldly. "I have men inside the federal holding facility on 26th Street. By sunrise, Viktor will realize that his Swiss bank accounts have been frozen, his offshore shell companies have been liquidated, and his loyalest lieutenants have accepted immunity in exchange for his complete financial ledger."

He opened the black binder, flipping past pages of bank routing numbers, medical facility leases, and adoption agency manifests until he stopped at a single, laminated document.

My heart stopped.

It was a birth certificate.

Infant Female (Twin A): Nadia Hayes-Caruso. Infant Female (Twin B): Leah Caruso. Attending Physician: Dr. Marcus Vance (formerly Althaus).

I stared at the paper, my fingers trembling as I reached out and touched the ink. Twin A.

"There were two," I whispered, the room spinning slightly around me. "I didn't lose one. They told me one died, but they stole her... or they gave her away."

"Not given away," Damian corrected, his voice dark and venomous. "Viktor knew that if I had a legitimate heir by an outside woman—someone outside the syndicate families—it would destabilize his position as my primary successor. He engineered the entire thing. He paid the clinic staff to falsify the medical records, told you your child didn't survive to break your spirit, and took one of the twins to use as a pawn in his corporate restructuring."

"And Leah?" I asked, looking up at him with wide, terrified eyes. "Why did he give Leah to you?"

"Because," Damian said, leaning back, his expression grim, "Viktor needed me distracted. He needed me paranoid, grieving, and emotionally compromised so he could quietly siphon control of our European shipping lanes. He placed Leah in my nursery twelve months later through an anonymous adoption broker, knowing I would never suspect my own brother of orchestrating the abduction."

"And my other daughter?" I whispered, the question tearing out of my throat like glass. "Where is Twin A?"

Damian’s eyes darkened into a storm.

"Viktor didn't keep her in Zurich," he said quietly. "Three days ago, before the federal raid on his port terminals, she was transferred to a private estate in Geneva under the care of a Swiss nanny."

He stood up, walking to the wall where a large digital monitor hung dormant. With a tap on his encrypted tablet, the screen flickered to life, displaying a live satellite feed of a sprawling chalet nestled in the snowy foothills of the Swiss Alps.

"Which means," Damian continued, turning to face me with a look of absolute, terrifying resolve, "we are going on a trip."
