Chapter 10 - The Dawn on Lake Michigan

Six months later.

The spring sun rose over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and violet.

The forty-seventh-floor office of Blackwood—no longer the Hail Mansion, but a unified empire built on loyalty, protection, and absolute reform—was filled with the soft hum of classical music and the rich scent of roasted coffee beans.

Marin stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a cream-colored silk blouse and a tailored black skirt, looking out over the city she had once scrubbed floors to survive in.

The door opened quietly.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her firmly against a warm, solid chest. A chin rested softly on her shoulder.

"You're staring at the shipping manifests again," Casper murmured, his voice rich and deep against her ear.

"I'm checking the quarterly tax audits," Marin smiled, leaning back into his embrace, her hands resting over his arms. "Posie is at school, her heart is beating at a hundred percent, and our logistics division hasn't had a single discrepancy in four months. I have to do something to earn my paycheck."

Casper chuckled, turning her around in his arms so she was facing him. He looked different than he had six months ago—the harsh, frozen edges of the mafia boss had softened, melted away by the quiet, steady warmth of a woman who had walked into his life with red wine on her collar and changed the course of his entire existence.

"Your paycheck," Casper whispered with a slow, teasing smile, "includes full ownership of this building, half my corporate holdings, and my undivided, lifelong attention. I think you're overqualified."

Marin reached up, her fingers tracing the clean line of his jaw where the faint shadow of a beard rested. "Is that so?"

"It is," Casper said.

He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of morning coffee and absolute, unbreakable certainty.

When they finally broke apart, Marin looked up into his ash-gray eyes, a bright, radiant smile touching her lips—the kind of smile that didn't need a crayon drawing to explain.

Down below, the great city of Chicago hummed with life, a chessboard where the pieces had finally found their true home.
