Chapter 4 - The Siege of Lake Forest

The iron gates of the Moretti estate looked like they had been hit by an artillery shell.

One half of the massive wrought-iron barrier hung limply from its hinges, twisted and blackened by an explosive charge. Two security SUVs were flipped on their sides in the driveway, their alarm sirens wailing uselessly into the stormy night sky.

Dante didn't slow down. He rammed the Mercedes straight through the ruined gate, the heavy bumper throwing debris into the air as they plowed up the long, winding driveway toward the main mansion.

Gunfire echoed through the trees—sharp, rhythmic bursts of automatic weapons fire.

“Stay in the car!” Dante ordered, pulling two custom matte-black handguns from a hidden compartment beneath the dashboard.

“Not a chance!” Mara snapped, pulling a heavy brass fire extinguisher from beneath her seat. “I told you—we’re partners!”

Dante looked at her for a split second, a flash of fierce pride illuminating his darkened features. “Behind me. Always behind me.”

They burst through the heavy front doors of the mansion. The grand foyer was in chaos. Shadows flickered under the emergency red strobe lights. Three compromised guards lay unconscious near the fountain, while two of Dante’s loyal Sicilian bodyguards were holding the line at the top of the grand staircase, trading shots with mercenary attackers dressed in unmarked tactical gear.

“Dante!” one of the loyal guards shouted over the din of gunfire. “They took out the primary power array! They’re trying to breach the vault in the east wing!”

Dante didn't waste breath answering. He raised his handguns, firing three precise shots that dropped two mercenary shooters advancing up the left balcony. His movements were terrifyingly surgical—the precision of a man who had fought his way up from the gutter to rule a city.

Mara stayed low, her heart hammering against her ribs, her sharp eyes scanning the smoke-filled corridor.

“The panic room isn't in the east wing,” Mara realized suddenly, grabbing Dante’s coat. “When I reviewed the blueprints yesterday, I noticed the emergency ventilation ducts for the vault loop through the old wine cellar under the kitchen!”

Dante stopped, turning to her. “Chen wouldn't take her out through the main hall. He’d take her through the service tunnels!”

“Follow me!” Mara shouted, turning on her heels and sprinting toward the service stairs near the kitchen—the paths used by staff, paths she knew better than anyone.

They plunged into the dark, narrow service corridors beneath the grand house. The air grew damp and cool, smelling of dirt, aged wood, and gunsmoke.

Around a sharp bend near the boiler room, a flash of white coat caught Mara’s eye.

“There!” she yelled.

Dr. Chen was dragging a small, squirming figure wrapped in a dark coat toward an iron exit door that opened into the wooded ravine behind the estate. In his right hand, Chen held a heavy suppressed pistol.

“Chen!” Dante’s voice thundered down the narrow hallway, echoing off the stone walls like a judgment from God.

Chen spun around, pulling Ava in front of him as a human shield. “Don't move, Dante! One step and I put a bullet through her heart!”

Ava was crying, her small hands clawing at Chen’s sleeve. “Daddy! Daddy, help me!”

Dante froze ten feet away, his guns raised, his hands trembling for the first time in his life. He couldn't take the shot. The risk of hitting Ava in the dim, red emergency light was too high.

“Drop the weapons, Moretti!” Chen screamed, his face twisted in desperate rage. “The council paid me fifty million dollars to deliver the girl alive to the docks! You’re finished! Your empire is burning!”

Mara stood beside Dante, her mind racing. She looked at the narrow corridor, the exposed pipes running along the ceiling, and the heavy iron valve wheel positioned directly above Chen’s head—a steam pressure valve she had noticed during her morning security walk.

She didn't reach for a gun. She picked up a heavy steel wrench lying on the maintenance cart beside her.

“Look at me, Chen!” Mara shouted, stepping out from behind Dante.

Chen’s eyes flicked to her for half a second. “Shut up, you stupid waitress—!”

With all the strength in her body, Mara hurled the heavy steel wrench directly at the overhead steam valve.

CRACK!

The wrench struck the rusted wheel with massive force. The valve ruptured instantly, blasting a roaring column of superheated, blinding white steam directly into Chen’s face.

Chen screamed in agony, dropping his weapon and releasing his grip on Ava as he clutched his scalded eyes.

“Ava! RUN!” Mara yelled.

The little girl didn't hesitate. She scrambled forward under the plume of steam, ducking beneath Chen’s flailing arms.

Dante didn't fire his gun. He surged forward like an unleashed storm, slamming his massive shoulder into Chen, throwing the traitorous doctor against the stone wall with a sickening impact that knocked him cold before he hit the floor.

Dante scooped Ava into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he dropped to his knees.

“I’ve got you, baby... I’ve got you,” Dante sobbed quietly, his entire body shaking as he held his daughter.

Mara collapsed against the opposite wall, sliding down to the cold concrete floor, her chest heaving as tears of sheer relief finally spilled down her cheeks.

Ava looked over Dante’s shoulder, her small, tear-stained face breaking into a soft smile as she held out a hand toward Mara.

“You did it again, Mara,” Ava whispered.

Mara reached out, taking the little girl’s tiny hand in hers, squeezing it tightly as the sound of sirens and approaching loyal guards began to fill the night sky above.
