CHAPTER 7: THE TRUTH LEO HAD BEEN CARRYING

CHAPTER 7: THE TRUTH LEO HAD BEEN CARRYING

The captured intruder regained consciousness just before dawn.

He was restrained in a secure interrogation room beneath the Romano estate. Marco stood silently by the door while Dominic sat across the table, saying nothing.

The silence lasted almost five minutes.

Finally, the man laughed weakly.

"You've changed, Romano."

Dominic didn't blink.

"You haven't."

The man's smile disappeared.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Dominic slid a photograph across the table.

It showed the man servicing the Romano family yacht six days before the explosion.

Then another.

A bank transfer.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Deposited into an offshore account the morning after Isabella died.

The mechanic swallowed.

"You can keep lying," Dominic said quietly.

"But if my son dies because of your silence..."

He leaned forward.

"...there won't be a prison on Earth that can protect you."

The man's hands began shaking.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

Dominic remained perfectly still.

"Who hired you?"

The mechanic closed his eyes.

"I never met him."

"Only his lawyer."

"They wanted access to the yacht."

"They said the explosion would happen after your wife got off."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"But she stayed longer than expected."

"They panicked."

"The remote detonator..."

His voice cracked.

"...went off anyway."

The room fell silent.

For two years Dominic had blamed himself.

Believed he should have protected Isabella.

Now he learned the truth.

She hadn't died in an accident.

She had been murdered.

At the same time upstairs, Beatrice was helping Leo finish breakfast.

The little boy kept glancing nervously toward the windows.

"You know," Beatrice said gently, "sometimes being scared doesn't mean you're unsafe."

Leo looked at her.

"It just means your heart remembers something terrible."

He slowly reached into the pocket of his little sweater.

Then placed a tiny silver object on the table.

Beatrice frowned.

It was a USB flash drive.

Old.

Scratched.

She looked at Leo.

"Where did you get this?"

He pointed upstairs.

Then toward a framed family photograph.

Finally...

He whispered one trembling word.

"Mom."

Beatrice's heart stopped.

Dominic rushed into the dining room moments later.

Beatrice silently handed him the flash drive.

"I think Leo's been hiding this."

Dominic stared at it.

Recognition flashed across his face.

"This was Isabella's."

Marco immediately connected it to a secure laptop.

A password screen appeared.

Nobody knew the code.

Then Leo quietly climbed into Dominic's lap.

With tiny fingers...

He typed six numbers.

The screen unlocked.

Dominic stared at his son.

"You remembered?"

Leo nodded.

The first file opened automatically.

It was a video.

Isabella appeared on the screen, wearing a life jacket aboard the yacht.

She looked frightened.

"If you're watching this..."

"...something happened to me."

Dominic stopped breathing.

"I discovered documents proving someone inside Romano Shipping has been working with international smugglers."

She held up several files.

"I copied everything."

"If they find out..."

She looked over her shoulder.

"...they'll kill me."

The video ended abruptly.

The room fell into stunned silence.

The evidence Leo had unknowingly protected for two years exposed an entire criminal network operating inside Dominic's own company.

The betrayal had come from within.

That afternoon, federal agents arrived at the Romano estate.

Armed with Isabella's files and the mechanic's confession, they executed search warrants across Chicago.

By sunset—

Three executives had been arrested.

Two judges resigned.

Several corrupt customs officials disappeared before authorities reached them.

The news dominated every television station in America.
