Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Library

Later that same night, long after Lily had fallen asleep clutching her stuffed rabbit, Claire walked down the dim, wood-paneled corridor toward the grand library.

The heavy mahogany door was cracked open a few inches, a warm bar of golden light spilling across the dark Persian runner on the floor. She balanced a porcelain mug of steaming black coffee in one hand and raised her knuckles to knock.

“You didn’t have to bring that,” Adrian’s deep voice drifted out from the shadows before her knuckles even touched the wood.

Claire pushed the door open gently and stepped inside. The library was vast, lined with leather-bound volumes that stretched up to a vaulted ceiling, dominated by a massive mahogany desk covered in stacks of papers.

“You’ve been working since dinner,” Claire said, walking over and placing the ceramic mug gently beside his hand on the blotter.

Adrian looked up from a dossier filled with financial statements. His eyes were shadowed with fatigue, the lines around his mouth hard and set.

“So have you,” he replied quietly.

She didn't immediately turn away. Her eyes drifted across the surface of his desk. Scattered among the ledgers and corporate reports were printed photographs of burned delivery vehicles, smashed warehouse doors in Brooklyn, and men with hard, unsmiling faces that Claire did not recognize.

“You look tired,” she said softly, the observation slipping out before she could censor herself.

Adrian glanced down at the photographs, then back up at her. The harsh light of the desk lamp caught the silver threads running through his dark hair.

“That seems to be a remarkably common opinion in your family,” he murmured, a faint, dry irony touching his tone.

Claire offered a small, hesitant smile, shaking her head. “Lily doesn’t care about business hours. She thinks the whole world is supposed to stop when she finds a really good pebble in the driveway.”

“She might be right,” Adrian said, his gaze lingering on Claire’s face longer than professional boundaries allowed. “The world would probably be a cleaner place if everyone stopped to inspect pebbles.”

He picked up the porcelain mug, taking a slow sip of the coffee, his dark eyes never leaving hers. There was a quiet, intense gravity in the air between them—a tension built on unspoken realities, shared secrets, and the fragile, unexpected bridge that a three-year-old child had built across two entirely separate universes.

Claire felt her breath catch slightly in her throat. She stepped back, breaking the spell.

“I’ll let you get back to your... invoices, Mr. Moretti.”

“Claire,” he said, stopping her before she reached the door.

She turned back, her hand resting on the brass doorknob.

“The security perimeter on the north fence was upgraded this afternoon,” he said evenly. “If anyone ever comes looking for you—anyone from your past—they won't even make it past the outer gate before Marcus intercepts them.”

Claire froze, her heart skipping a beat. She had never told Adrian the full details of her marriage, never mentioned Mason, never explained why she had fled into the night with two hundred dollars in her pocket. She had assumed he didn't know, or didn't care.

“How did you—”

“I run an organization that collects information for a living, Claire,” he interrupted gently, though his eyes were as sharp as steel. “It would be a poor reflection on my competence if I didn't know who was living under my roof. Mason Bennett is currently serving a ninety-day county sentence in Pennsylvania for assault and parole violation. When he gets out, he will find that his debts have been settled by an anonymous third party, and that any attempt to cross state lines into New York will result in immediate, permanent consequences.”

Tears sprang to Claire’s eyes, hot and sudden. She stared at the man standing across the room—the syndicate boss, the dark legend whispered about in police precincts—and realized she was looking at a protector who operated in the shadows she could never hope to navigate.

“Thank you,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

“Go to sleep, Claire,” Adrian said softly, turning his attention back to his desk. “You’re safe here.”
