Part 2 The Truth Behind the Perfect Man
Arya's face lost what little color remained.
For several seconds she simply stared at Matteo, as if deciding whether the truth would destroy her faster than the lie.
Finally, she whispered:
"Because if you investigate him, he'll kill my brother."
The hallway went silent.
Matteo felt something cold settle inside his chest.
"What?"
Arya closed her eyes.
"My brother owes money."
"To Adrien?"
She nodded.
"Three years ago, Daniel developed a gambling addiction after our father died. He borrowed from people he shouldn't have. One of those people was connected to Adrien."
Matteo listened without interrupting.
"Adrien paid the debt," she continued. "At least that's what he told me."
"And then?"
"And then he owned us."
The words sounded broken.
Matteo's jaw tightened.
Arya looked away.
"At first it was small things. Telling me who I could see. What I should wear. Which friends were bad influences. Then it became worse."
"The bruises."
She nodded again.
"He never hits where people can see."
Something dangerous flashed behind Matteo's eyes.
"He always apologizes afterward," Arya said bitterly. "Flowers. Gifts. Tears. Promises."
"How long?"
"A year."
Matteo nearly stopped breathing.
A year.
For an entire year she had walked into his office every morning carrying this nightmare alone.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Arya laughed softly.
The sound was heartbreaking.
"You're Matteo Valente."
"And?"
"You solve problems permanently."
Neither denied it.
She continued.
"If Adrien disappeared, everyone would know why."
Matteo understood.
She wasn't afraid for herself.
She was afraid that he would destroy his own future trying to save hers.
At that moment footsteps echoed down the hallway.
One of Matteo's security chiefs approached quickly.
"Boss. Five minutes until your speech."
Matteo never took his eyes off Arya.
"Change of plans."
The guard immediately straightened.
"Sir?"
"Keep Dr. Adrien Vale away from Miss Monroe for the rest of the evening."
The guard blinked.
Then nodded.
"Understood."
Arya looked horrified.
"Matteo—"
"No."
It was the first time he had ever used her first name without a title between them.
And somehow it felt more intimate than a confession.
"You've spent a year protecting everyone else."
He stepped closer.
"Tonight someone protects you."
The gala proceeded as planned.
At least on the surface.
The ballroom sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers.
Politicians smiled.
Donors applauded.
Champagne flowed.
No one noticed the silent war unfolding beneath the glamour.
When Adrien attempted to approach Arya, security redirected him.
When he demanded explanations, they smiled politely and delayed him.
And while cameras focused on charity announcements, Matteo's private investigators began opening doors.
Within two hours they found something astonishing.
Within four hours they found something criminal.
Within six hours they found enough evidence to destroy Adrien Vale forever.
Fraud.
Illegal prescriptions.
Extortion.
Financial coercion.
And multiple reports from women who had been too frightened to speak publicly.
Arya wasn't the first victim.
She was simply the last one he thought would escape.
At 11:47 p.m., Adrien stormed into a private conference room inside Valente Tower.
Matteo was waiting.
So were two attorneys.
Three investigators.
And four federal agents.
Adrien stopped cold.
"What is this?"
Matteo slid a folder across the table.
"Your future."
Adrien opened it.
His face drained of color.
For the first time in years, the famous surgeon looked afraid.
"You're making a mistake."
"No."
Matteo leaned forward.
"You made one."
Adrien swallowed.
"What mistake?"
Matteo's voice became ice.
"You left fingerprints."
