Chapter 4 - The Ledger of the Dead

The sit-down ended in absolute disaster for the Moretti family. Mateo and his son left the estate within ten minutes, their tires spraying slush across the driveway as they sped away under the watchful, armed eyes of Lorenzo’s men.

By noon, the estate was placed on high alert. Armed guards stood at every entrance gate, and the quiet luxury of the mansion was replaced by the tense, focused energy of a command center preparing for battle.

I sat in Lorenzo’s private study on the ground floor, holding a cup of warm broth for Emma, who was sitting on the leather sofa, coloring in a book Mrs. Gable had brought her.

Gia stood by the window, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring out at the snow-covered grounds.

"You've lost your mind, Father," Gia said, turning around to face Lorenzo, who was sitting at his desk reviewing a stack of documents. "Declaring open war with Providence over an employee? The capos are already asking questions. They think you've lost your judgment."

"Let them ask," Lorenzo said without looking up. "The capos follow strength, Gia. For two years, since your brother died, we have been playing defense. We let the Moretti family push into our territory, we let the federal prosecutors squeeze our logistics, because you wanted to play business executive."

He slammed his hand down on the desk, the heavy mahogany vibrating under the impact.

"A business executive gets swallowed whole by men like Mateo Moretti!" Lorenzo roared. "A crime boss makes them bleed before they even think about stepping over his line!"

"And what happens when the federal prosecutor uses Sal's testimony to issue indictments next week?" Gia countered, her voice rising to match his. "Sal had access to the offshore accounts! He knows about the shipping manifests from Rotterdam!"

"Sal doesn't have the ledgers," a quiet voice spoke up.

Both Lorenzo and Gia turned to look at me.

I stood up from the sofa, setting Emma's bowl down on the table.

"What did you say, Sophia?" Lorenzo asked, his eyes narrowing.

"Sal doesn't have the Rotterdam manifests," I repeated, my heart pounding in my throat as I stepped toward the desk. "I know because I found them three weeks ago."

Gia let out a cold, disbelieving laugh. "You found them? Where? In a broom closet?"

"In the antique silver tea set," I answered, looking directly at Gia. "The heavy Victorian set that belonged to your grandmother. The one Lorenzo asked me to polish last month."

Lorenzo leaned forward, his entire posture freezing. "Go on."

"The teapot has a double bottom," I explained, my voice steadying as the memory came back clearly. "When I was cleaning the tarnished base with the silver dip, the seal near the handle came loose. Inside was a set of micro-ledger cards wrapped in oilcloth. I didn't know what they were at the time—I thought they were old family records—so I hid them back inside the base and sealed it with silver wax so no one would damage them."

Gia stared at me, her mouth slightly open in utter disbelief. "The Rotterdam micro-cards... we thought my brother lost them when his boat was seized in 2023..."

"Where is the tea set now, Sophia?" Lorenzo asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"It's downstairs in the basement vault," I said. "Where I put it after I finished polishing it."

Lorenzo looked at Gia, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his weathered face.

"The Rotterdam ledgers contain every financial transaction Mateo Moretti made with the European cartel over the last five years," Lorenzo said softly, his gray eyes glowing with absolute, lethal triumph. "If we hand those cards to the federal prosecutor, Sal's testimony becomes completely useless, and Mateo spends the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."

Gia looked at me, her sharp, cold demeanor cracking entirely. For the first time, she looked at me not as a housemaid, not as a liability, but as the single most valuable person in the entire Duca empire.

"You knew what they were?" Gia asked softly.

"I didn't know the details," I replied. "But my husband was a mechanic, Miss Duca. He taught me that when something valuable is hidden inside metal, you don't touch it unless you know who owns the key."

Lorenzo stood up from his desk, walking slowly around the table until he stood in front of me.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a key on a heavy silver ring. He held it out to me.

"This opens the basement vault," Lorenzo said softly. "Go down there with Marco. Bring me the tea set."

He looked over at Emma, who was watching us quietly from the sofa, holding her small silver bracelet in her fingers.

"And Sophia?" Lorenzo added, his voice filled with a warmth I had never heard before. "When this is over... you and your daughter will never polish another piece of silver for as long as you live."
