Chapter 6 - The Empress of Manhattan

Six months later, the first snow of winter began to fall over the city, covering the gray streets of Brooklyn in a clean, quiet white coat.

The Shady Pines Luxury Care facility had been completely transformed. It was no longer owned by a faceless corporation; it was now managed by the Elena Callahan Medical Trust, a private foundation funded entirely by the Rosetti empire. The building had been renovated with state-of-the-art medical equipment, beautifully manicured indoor gardens, and a staff-to-patient ratio that made it the premier facility on the East Coast.

In the corner room on the third floor, a room with a massive bay window overlooking a frost-covered rose garden, an elderly woman sat in a plush rocking chair. Elena Callahan smiled as the door opened, her eyes clear for the first time in days.

"Look at you, Maggie," Elena whispered, her shaky hand reaching out. "You look beautiful."

Bee walked into the room, wearing a soft cream-colored sweater and dark trousers. Her feet didn't ache anymore; she didn't have to wear her cheap work shoes. She sat on the armrest of the chair, kissing her mother’s forehead. "I brought you some tea, Mom. Real chamomile. Not the paper bag stuff."

"Did your friend come with you?" Elena asked, looking toward the door.

Maxim Rosetti stepped into the room. He wasn't the feared mafia boss of Manhattan today. He didn't have his bodyguards with him; his coat was dusted with fresh snow, and he carried a small, beautifully wrapped box of imported Italian pastries.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Callahan," Maxim said, his voice softer than anyone in the city would believe possible. He set the pastries on the table and walked over to stand beside Bee, his hand naturally finding hers and squeezing it tight.

"You're a good boy, Maxim," Elena smiled, her mind drifting back into the fog, but her heart recognizing the warmth in the room. "Take care of my Bee. She never stops moving."

"I will," Maxim said, looking down at Bee with an adoration that was deep, steady, and unbreakable. "She’s the only one who keeps me grounded."

Later that evening, after Elena had fallen into a peaceful sleep, Maxim and Bee walked out into the central courtyard of the estate. The snow was falling thicker now, creating a silent, magical world around them.

Maxim stopped beneath a stone archway, turning Bee to face him. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, heavy object wrapped in a clean, faded pink diner napkin.

Bee blinked, a sudden smile breaking across her face. "What is that?"

Maxim unwrapped the napkin, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut emerald ring surrounded by a halo of diamonds. The green stone caught the golden light of the courtyard lamps, glowing like a living thing.

"Six months ago, you told me you were going to end me, Adelaide," Maxim murmured, his dark eyes shining with an immense, quiet emotion as he dropped to one knee in the fresh snow. "And you did. You ended the loneliness. You ended the paranoia. You saved my empire, but more than that, you saved my life."

He took her hand, his fingers warm against hers. "I don't need an auditor anymore, Bee. I need a partner. I need a queen. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled over Bee’s lashes, freezing against her cheeks like tiny diamonds. She looked at the man who had looked past her size, past her uniform, and had seen the brilliant, unbreakable soul hidden beneath the grease stains.

She looked up at the window of her mother’s warm, safe room, then back down at the billionaire king kneeling in the snow.

"You're still an idiot for paying twenty dollars for a diner steak, Rosetti," Bee laughed through her tears, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. "But yes. A million times, yes."

Maxim rose to his feet, slipping the heavy emerald ring onto her finger before pulling her into his arms. He spun her around in the falling snow, his lips meeting hers in a sweet, passionate promise that would change the history of the city forever. The waitress who had once been invisible had finally found her throne, wrapped securely in the arms of the empire she had built with nothing but numbers, nerve, and a completely unbreakable heart.
