Chapter 4 - The Gala of Wolves

By the end of January, the quiet routine of Claire Bennett’s life had irrevocably intertwined with the formidable orbit of Alessandro Delvecchio.
It was not a sudden takeover, but a gradual, exquisite siege. Every evening at 6:00 p.m., a quiet black sedan would drop off fresh, organic groceries from the city’s top Italian markets. Every Saturday morning, Alessandro himself would show up—without his usual army of guards, wearing plain dark jeans and a cashmere sweater—to sit on the living room floor with Eli, helping the boy build complex wooden train tracks with a patience that astounded Claire's mother.
Eli had accepted Alessandro completely. To the four-year-old, the tall, quiet man with the deep voice was simply "San"—the person who brought silent toys, never spoke too loudly, and held his hand firmly whenever they crossed the street.
But the peace was fragile.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, an elegant gold-embossed envelope arrived at Claire’s bungalow, delivered by a uniformed courier.
It was an invitation to the annual Boston Maritime Heritage Gala—the most prestigious charity event of the winter season, attended by the city’s political elite, high-society families, and the old-money syndicates that governed the docks.
Attached to the invitation was a handwritten note from Alessandro:
They are beginning to ask questions about why I have cancelled three major board meetings to sit on a rug in South Boston. It is time to show them who holds my heart. Will you walk with me? — A.
Claire stood in front of her bedroom mirror two nights later, her heart racing as she looked at her reflection.
Alessandro had sent a dark crimson floor-length gown made of heavy Italian silk. It draped over her curves with liquid perfection, featuring a tasteful off-the-shoulder neckline and a modest slit up the side. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck.
When the doorbell rang, Claire took a deep breath, smoothing down the silk fabric, and opened the door.
Alessandro stood on her porch in a classic black tuxedo, his bowtie perfectly tied, his dark hair slicked back. He looked every inch the undisputed king of the city’s underworld.
When he saw her, the formidable man froze. His dark eyes swept over her from head to toe, burning with a fierce, possessive admiration that made Claire’s blood run hot.
"Claire," he breathed, stepping inside and closing the door. "You are... breathtaking."
"I feel like an imposter," Claire admitted, reaching up to adjust the diamond earrings he had sent with the dress. "I’m a schoolteacher, Alessandro. I spend my days wiping apple juice off tiny tables. These people... your people... they are going to eat me alive."
Alessandro stepped close, taking both of her gloved hands in his.
"Listen to me," he said, his voice dropping into that dark, absolute register that always commanded her total trust. "Those people in that ballroom are wolves. They wear million-dollar suits and pretend to be civilized, but they are hollow. You have more courage, more honesty, and more dignity in your little finger than the entire city council combined."
He raised her hand to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles.
"Walk with your head high, my love. You are with me. No one touches you. No one speaks down to you."
The grand ballroom of the Fairmont Copley Plaza was a glittering sea of gold, crystal, and black ties. Over five hundred of the state’s most powerful figures were gathered inside, sipping thousand-dollar champagne while a chamber orchestra played soft classical music.
When the massive double doors opened and Alessandro Delvecchio entered the room with Claire Bennett on his arm, a sudden, palpable hush rippled across the grand hall.
Whispers erupted like wildfire.
"Who is she?" "Is that Delvecchio's new interest?" "Where is she from? A European family?" "Look at how he's holding her..."
Alessandro ignored the eyes staring at them. He walked through the crowd with supreme indifference, his hand resting firmly on the small of Claire’s back, guiding her toward the elevated VIP section.
"See?" Alessandro murmured near her ear, his warm breath sending shivers down her spine. "They are afraid of you because they do not know how I found someone so pure."
Before Claire could respond, a group of three elderly men in tailored charcoal suits stepped into their path, led by an older man with silver hair, sharp features, and a sneering, arrogant mouth.
It was Donato Moretti—head of the rival Moretti syndicate, and the uncle of the men Alessandro’s security had removed from her street weeks earlier.
"Alessandro," Donato said, his voice raspy like dry leaves. He held out a hand with heavy gold rings. "It has been too long. We were beginning to think you had retired from public life."
Alessandro did not shake the man’s hand. He stood motionless, his posture regal and cold. "Donato. I see you are still attending events you were not invited to."
Donato’s eyes flashed with venom, but he forced a fake, oily smile, turning his attention directly to Claire.
"And who is this lovely flower?" Donato asked, taking a step toward her, his gaze appraising her with insolent scrutiny. "You must be the schoolteacher from South Boston. The one who has kept our young boss so... preoccupied."
The air in the immediate vicinity dropped ten degrees.
Alessandro moved so fast it was invisible. In a split second, he had stepped directly in front of Claire, shielding her entirely with his broad shoulders, his height towering over the older man.
"Choose your next words with extreme care, Donato," Alessandro said softly. The tone was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, lethal resonance that made the surrounding guests instantly back away. "You are speaking to the future matriarch of the Delvecchio family. If your tone lacks proper respect, I will personally ensure you do not leave this hotel on your feet."
Donato paled, taking an involuntary step back. He looked into Alessandro’s eyes and saw absolute, unyielding willingness to start a war right there on the marble floor.
"My apologies," Donato stammered, swallowing hard, bowing his head slightly. "No offense was intended, Mr. Delvecchio."
"Leave," Alessandro commanded flatly.
Donato and his men turned and vanished quickly into the crowd.
Claire, standing behind Alessandro, felt her heart hammering in her chest. She looked at his broad back, at the rigid, defensive posture of a man who had just declared her his future matriarch in front of every powerful figure in the state.
Alessandro turned back to her, his dark eyes instantly softening as he searched her face for any sign of fear.
"Are you okay?" he asked gently, reaching out to touch her hand. "Did he frighten you?"
May you like
Claire looked at him—this dangerous, terrifying man who was feared by the entire city, yet looked at her as if she were the only thing that mattered in the universe.
"No," Claire whispered, her voice filled with a sudden, overwhelming realization. She stepped close, wrapping her hand around his arm, leaning her head against his shoulder in front of the entire ballroom. "He didn't frighten me at all. Because I know who protects me."
