Chapter 2 - The Confrontation

The morning sun broke over the Moretti estate in brilliant rays of pale gold, scattering the heavy fog that hung over the manicured lawns.

In the grand kitchen of the west wing, the aroma of brewing coffee and toasted rye bread filled the air. Elena Carter stood at the stainless steel prep counter, her hair tied back in a sensible ponytail, wearing her neatly pressed grey maid's uniform. She was buttering a tray of fresh toast for the household staff when the heavy oak door swung open.

Pauline Reed, the head housekeeper, walked in. Her face was unusually pale, her hands trembling slightly as she held a silver serving tray.

"Elena," Pauline said, her voice tight.

Elena turned around, wiping her hands on her apron. "Good morning, Pauline. I'm almost finished with the breakfast prep—"

"Stop what you're doing," Pauline interrupted softly. "Mr. Moretti wants to see you in his office."

Elena felt her stomach drop into a cold, bottomless pit. She dropped the butter knife onto the counter with a metallic clatter. "My office? Why? Did I leave something dirty in the library? Was the dusting—"

"He didn't say," Pauline whispered, looking around nervously as if the walls had ears. "And Elena... he asked for Mia, too."

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a sledgehammer. Panic, sharp and sickening, surged through her veins. Mia. Had Mia broken something? Had she wandered somewhere she shouldn't have?

"Where is she?" Elena asked frantically.

"She’s in the staff sitting room with Mabel," Pauline replied. "Go. You don't keep Mr. Moretti waiting."

Two minutes later, Elena walked down the long, silent corridor of the east wing, holding Mia’s small hand tightly in her own. Mia was wearing her simple denim overalls and yellow shirt, clutching her one-eared rabbit against her chest.

"Mommy, why are your hands sweaty?" Mia asked, looking up with wide, innocent brown eyes.

"Just walk quietly, sweetie," Elena whispered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to stay composed. "Remember what we talked about. We're careful."

"Careful," Mia repeated obediently.

They reached the massive double doors of Alessandro Moretti’s private office. Two tall guards in dark suits stood outside. One of them, a broad-shouldered man with a scar across his cheek, looked down at Mia with an expression that was surprisingly gentle, then knocked twice on the heavy wood.

"Enter," a deep voice boomed from inside.

Elena pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The office was vast, lined with leather-bound books and heavy dark furniture. Standing behind the massive mahogany desk was Alessandro Moretti. He wore a dark charcoal suit, his tie impeccably knotted. Beside him stood Richard Hale and a woman in a sharp navy business suit holding a leather briefcase.

On the corner of the desk sat a laptop. Its screen was turned toward the door.

Elena stopped ten feet from the desk, pulling Mia slightly behind her skirt. "Mr. Moretti... Pauline said you needed to see me. If I did something wrong, or if Mia was somewhere she shouldn't have been, I am so sorry. Please, don't fire us. I will pay for whatever—"

"Elena," Alessandro interrupted. His voice was not angry. It was steady, resonant, and strangely quiet. "Sit down."

He gestured to two plush velvet chairs arranged in front of the desk.

Elena hesitated, her knees trembling so badly she wasn't sure they would support her weight. She walked forward and sat down, pulling Mia onto her lap.

Alessandro did not sit. He walked around the desk, stopping a few feet away. He looked down at Mia, his dark eyes softening just a fraction.

"Hello, Mia," Alessandro said smoothly.

Mia stared up at the tall man. She didn't hide behind her mother. Instead, she lifted Mabel slightly. "This is Mabel."

"I see," Alessandro said politely. "She appears to be a very brave rabbit."

"She is," Mia agreed solemnly. "She isn't scared of the dark."

Alessandro looked up at Elena. His face hardened instantly as he gestured to the laptop on the desk. "At midnight last night, my security chief installed a camera in my daughter’s nursery. I watched the footage at one o'clock this morning."

Elena’s face drained of all color. Blood rushed in her ears, making her feel dizzy. The nursery. Mia had been going into the baby's room.

"Mr. Moretti, I swear to God I didn't know!" Elena sobbed, tears spilling over her lashes. "I lock our bedroom door every night, but the latch must be loose! She sneaks out when I'm asleep! I swear she didn't mean any harm, she's only three—"

"Elena, stop," Alessandro commanded firmly, raising a hand.

Elena choked back a sob, pressing her cheek against Mia’s soft hair.

"I didn't call you here to fire you," Alessandro said, his steel-grey eyes fixing on her with terrifying intensity. "I called you here because for eleven months, my daughter has cried until her throat was raw. Every doctor in this city told me she was fine. Every nanny told me she just needed time. But last night, I watched your daughter walk into that room, put her hand through the bars, and quiet my child in ninety seconds."

Elena blinked, stunned. "What?"

Alessandro leaned against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms. "My daughter slept until seven o'clock this morning. She woke up smiling. And when I went into her crib, she was holding that battered stuffed rabbit."

Mia perked up. "Mabel helped her!"

"Yes, she did," Alessandro said softly to Mia. Then he looked back at Elena. "Which brings me to the second reason you are in this office."

He gestured to the woman in the navy suit.

"This is Sarah Jenkins, my primary corporate attorney," Alessandro said. "And this..." He tapped the manila folder lying on the desk. "...is the file on Marcus Vance."

Elena froze. The room seemed to tilt beneath her. The name Marcus Vance sounded like a death sentence echoing in the air.

"How... how do you know that name?" Elena whispered, her hands gripping Mia so tightly the child shifted uncomfortably.

"I know that he is an enforcer for the O'Connell crew," Alessandro said, his tone turning ice-cold. "I know he burnt your child's arm two years ago. And I know he put a thirty-thousand-dollar bounty on the street to find you."

Elena burst into full, uncontrollable tears, burying her face in her hands. "Oh God... oh God, he found us. He's going to take her... he's going to kill us..."

"Elena, look at me," Alessandro commanded.

The authority in his voice was absolute. Elena forced herself to lift her head, wiping her wet face with the sleeve of her uniform.

Alessandro took three steps forward and knelt on one knee in front of her chair. He was now at eye level with her and Mia.

"No one is taking anyone," Alessandro said, each word weighed like lead. "Marcus Vance does not own you. And he certainly does not own this child. As of eight o'clock this morning, my legal team filed emergency custody protection papers in the Cook County Family Court. Sarah has already secured a temporary restraining order backed by federal security protocols."

Elena stared at him, unable to comprehend what she was hearing. "Why... why would you do that for us?"

Alessandro looked at Mia, reaching out with one finger to gently tap the tip of her small nose. Mia giggled softly.

"Because your daughter gave my child peace last night," Alessandro said, looking back at Elena. "In my world, Elena, debts are paid in full. You protected my daughter. Now, I protect yours."

Before Elena could process his words, the phone on Alessandro’s desk rang sharp and loud.

Richard Hale walked over, picked up the receiver, listened for three seconds, and looked at Alessandro with a dark, grim expression.

"Mr. Moretti," Richard said quietly. "The front gate security just called. There’s a vehicle parked outside the perimeter fence. A dark sedan registered to a Marcus Vance."
