Chapter 5 - THE MORNING AFTER

The morning light broke over the Marquetti estate in a brilliant, clear sheet of gold and blue.

Down in the city, the newspapers carried frantic reports of the complete, overnight disappearance of the Moretti crime family's senior leadership. The shipping docks were quiet, the unions were silent, and every rival faction in the state understood that Dante Marquetti had officially reclaimed his absolute throne.

Up on the second floor of the mansion, however, the world was completely still.

In the master bedroom suite—a room that had been locked and cold for three long years—the heavy velvet curtains were pushed wide open, allowing the warm morning sun to fill the vast room.

Hannah lay on the massive king-sized bed, propped up against a pile of soft feather pillows. A warm wool blanket was pulled up to her waist. Her minor cuts had been cleaned and bandaged by the estate’s private physician, and her face held a soft, restful color.

Beside her, sleeping soundly on the plush duvet, was little Rosie. Her small hands were wrapped tightly around her stuffed rabbit, her dinosaur backpack sitting safely on the bedside table.

Dante sat in a heavy leather armchair beside the bed.

He was wearing a clean white shirt, his sleeves rolled up, a cup of warm tea resting on the small table beside him. He hadn't slept a single minute all night. He had sat in that chair, watching the soft rise and fall of Hannah’s chest, ensuring that not even a shadow touched her sleep.

Hannah stirred softly, her brown eyes slowly opening.

She looked around the grand room, then her eyes settled on Dante. A gentle, beautiful smile touched her lips.

"Good morning, Dante," she whispered, her voice soft and slightly raspy.

Dante leaned forward, placing his hand gently over hers on the bedsheet. His thumb lightly stroked her knuckles.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

"Much better," Hannah replied, looking at their joined hands. "Thank you... for saving us last night."

Dante looked down at the floor for a moment, his jaw tightening slightly. "I should have protected you better, Hannah. I brought you into my world, and my enemies targeted you because of me. You have every right to take Rosie and leave this house. I will give you enough money to buy a house anywhere in the country—"

"Dante," Hannah interrupted gently.

She reached out with her free hand, resting her soft palm against his sharp, scarred jaw.

Dante froze, looking up into her warm brown eyes.

"We don't want to leave," Hannah said softly, her voice filled with an honest, undeniable affection. "Rosie and I... we've never felt safer anywhere than we do right here. With you."

Dante felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at this incredible, courageous woman who had stood between her child and armed men, a woman who looked past his dark past and saw the man underneath.

"Hannah," Dante whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "For three years, I lived in this house like a dead man. I thought my life ended the night I lost Aurora. I thought I was only meant to guard an empty castle."

He leaned leaning his face into her soft palm.

"Then your daughter walked into my dining room," Dante continued, tears glinting in his gray eyes. "She pulled out a chair. And she reminded me what it felt like to be human again. And then... I looked at you. And I realized that my heart wasn't dead at all."

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears of pure, overwhelming happiness. "Dante..."

"I love you, Hannah," Dante said, the words coming out strong, clear, and absolute. "I love you, and I love Rosie. If you will let me... I want to give you both my name. I want to build a life with you."

Hannah let out a soft, sobbing laugh, leaning forward on the bed and wrapping her arms around his broad neck, pulling him close.

"Yes," Hannah wept softly against his neck. "Yes, Dante. We love you too."

From the center of the bed, a small voice piped up.

"Mommy? Mister King?"

Dante and Hannah pulled back slightly, looking down at Rosie, who was sitting up, rubbing her eyes with her small fists. She looked at them both, then looked at the soft sunlight filling the room.

"Are we having star carrots for breakfast?" Rosie asked hopefully.

May you like

Dante let out a deep, booming laugh—a sound that filled the entire master suite, echoing down the halls of the estate, shattering the last remnants of three years of darkness.

"Yes, Rosie," Dante smiled, reaching out and lifting her into his arms alongside her mother. "We're having star carrots every single day."
