Chapter 6 - The Third Wish

On December eighteenth, one year after the night that changed everything, the Moretti estate held its annual memorial dinner for Sofia.
This time, however, the house was not silent.
Soft, classical piano music drifted through the grand ballroom. Warm beeswax candles flickered on the tables, casting a golden glow across thirty guests—family friends, hospital directors, and loyal associates. The air smelled of roasted chestnuts, fresh pine, and rich Italian wine.
Sofia was remembered not with suffocating grief, but with love, stories, and laughter.
Vincent stood near the grand fireplace, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. Beside him stood Clara, looking breathtaking in an emerald-green evening gown, her dark hair pinned up in an elegant chignon. On his left stood little Ellie, now four and a half years old, wearing a white lace dress with a yellow bow in her dark curls.
Vincent tapped a silver spoon against his champagne glass, commanding the warm room to silence.
"Thank you all for coming tonight," Vincent began, his voice strong, clear, and filled with emotion. "Eight years ago, I lost my daughter Sofia. For a long time, I believed my life ended with hers. I built walls of ice around my heart and called it control."
He looked down at Clara, his eyes shining with deep love, then down at Ellie.
"But a wise little girl once reminded me that promises made to children are sacred," Vincent continued. "She reminded me that wishes have power, if we are brave enough to grant them."
Vincent reached into his vest pocket and pulled out the third and final gold coin—the novelty coin that Sofia had loved so much.
He knelt down on one knee on the polished marble floor in front of Ellie, just as he had done a year ago.
"Ellie," Vincent said softly, holding out the gold coin in his palm. "One year ago, you asked two wishes. You asked why your mother had to say sorry, and you asked for her to stop wearing the black dress. Both of those wishes came true."
Ellie looked at the shining gold coin, her big blue eyes bright with wonder. She reached out her small hand and took the coin from his palm.
"What is your third wish, Ellie?" Vincent asked gently, his heart swelling with an emotion so deep it brought tears to his eyes.
Ellie looked at the coin, then looked up at Clara, who was smiling through happy tears. Then, the little girl stepped forward, wrapped her tiny arms around Vincent's neck, and whispered into his ear so the whole room could hear:
"I wish you would be my real Daddy forever."
A collective, emotional sigh swept through the ballroom. Clara covered her mouth, her tears overflowing, as Aldo Rinaldi wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.
Vincent wrapped his arms tightly around the little girl, lifting her up into his embrace, holding her close against his chest.
"Wish granted, Ellie," Vincent choked out, his voice thick with tears of absolute joy. "Wish granted forever."
Vincent stood up, holding Ellie in his arm, and extended his other hand to Clara, pulling her into his side. He kissed Clara deeply on the lips as the entire room erupted into warm, joyful applause.

Outside the tall windows, a soft, beautiful white snow began to fall over the Long Island estate, blanketing the dark stone terraces in pure, unbroken white.
Inside, the house was filled with light, music, and the sweet, eternal sound of a family made whole.
