Chapter 6 - Sunrise on the Sound

The morning sun rose over Long Island Sound, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold. The ocean waves crashed rhythmically against the jagged granite cliffs below the Serrano estate, washing away the remnants of the night’s storm.

In the private conservatory on the third floor, surrounded by towering glass windows and blooming orchids, Victoria sat in a velvet armchair, sipping a cup of steaming Earl Grey tea.

The transformation was complete. The broken, starving ghost who had stumbled into the Fifth Avenue salon just days ago was gone. In her place sat the rightful heir to the Vance empire—poised, powerful, and radiating an inner strength that could never be broken.

The heavy oak door swung open silently.

Dante walked in. He had removed his jacket, his white dress shirt open at the collar, holding a thick stack of legal documents in his hand. He stopped a few feet away, watching her with a quiet, intense gaze.

“The federal prosecutors finished sweeping the accounts,” Dante said, his voice softer than usual. “Your uncle’s assets have been frozen, and the court has issued an emergency injunction restoring the entirety of the Vance shipping fleet to your name. By Monday morning, you legally own everything he tried to steal.”

Victoria set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft clink. She looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with deep, profound gratitude.

“And the shipping lanes?” she asked. “The ones he sold to the syndicates?”

“Reclaimed,” Dante replied smoothly. “My men handled the buyout this morning. Nobody will ever touch your assets again.”

Victoria stood up from the armchair. She walked slowly across the Persian rug until she was standing just inches away from him. She reached out, her warm, steady hand resting gently against the lapel of his shirt, right over the hidden scar where the bullet had grazed him.

“You gave me back my life, Dante,” she whispered. “You didn't just kill my demons—you stood in the dark with me until I found the light.”

Dante looked down at her, his slate-gray eyes softening into something entirely human. The cold, ruthless enforcer who ruled the underworld vanished, leaving only a man who had finally found his equal.

“I didn't give you anything, Victoria,” Dante said, his voice a low, rough murmur. “You fought your way out of the dark all by yourself long before you ever reached my door. I just happened to be standing there when you stepped into the light.”

Victoria smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that chased away the last lingering shadows of the past twelve years.

She leaned in, her lips brushing softly against his cheek, before whispering, “Then stay here with me in the light.”

Outside, the Atlantic waves crashed against the stone cliffs, heralding a brand-new day. The empire was restored, the ghosts were laid to rest, and in the arms of the most feared man in America, the lost heiress had finally come home.
